Convertible motor and wiring diagnostics?

Don Smith 18 April 2005 23:00:11
I need to get my convertible top working, so I was wondering if there
are some good diagnotic information I can get that will walk me
through a thorough check out of my 64 Daytona Convertible?

 Don,

Jeez, Don, with a nice new top, why would you want to put it down? <G>

How far have you checked it? Do you have power to the pump, is it the
pump, or is it hydraulic?

I just bought a meter and was going to physically inspect everything.
It didn't work when I bought the car three years ago and it sat abut
12 yearss prior to that. I just was looking for some guidelines.

 Don,

There is not much to the top wiring on that car. Basically, you have
a power wire to the swtich under the dash and 2 wires that run back to
the motor. These two wires (red and green if I remember correctly)
are their own mini-harness and are separate from the rear body
harness.

I would pull the connector loose at the pump and check for voltage
there while you have someone working the switch for you. If you have
power AT the pump you have found your problem. If no power to the
pump, I'd check the supply to the switch next followed by the actual
harness running under the carpet.

Pumps tend to get stuck when they sit even for a year or so without being
run. I'd tend to believe that is the problem rather than wiring. Sometimes
they can be freed up (but it's been so long since I've done one that I can't
remember what I did to unstick them).
