Tire sizes 101 (not OT)

Paul Johnson 15 April 2005 20:34:43
I had the opportunity to directly compare several tires today. They are
pictures here:
http://www.frontiernet.net/~thejohnsons/Tire%20sizes%20101/
It is not a website, just an image hosting site, so you have to open each
picture then click "Back" to get to the others.
The tire on the left is a P225x75x15 radial on a Mopar 15x6.5" rim (from my
'64 Avanti). It is inflated to 32 psi. The center one is a NOS Firestone
Champion 6.70x15 bias ply tire on a 5" stock Avanti rim. It is inflated to
30 psi. The tire on the right is a used Goodyear Vector P205x75x15 radial
on a 4.5" Lark rim. It is inflated to 32psi.
As you can see, the 205 is significantly smaller in diameter (26 3/4"
compared to the 6.70 at 28 5/16" and the 225 at 28 1/4") which means anyone
running 205s is going to have a significant speedometer error.
For what it's worth.

The "rolling" radius of the tire under load can be different, and of
course the rim width makes a difference. Here is a website that helps
with estimating tire replacement sizes (divide the difference in the
revs/mile by the revs/mile of the stock size to get the speedometer error):

Here's a tire chart showing best equivalent sizes:

 Great point!
I had a nasty rear end posi noise coming out of my Auburn posi a while back.
Nasty sounding crick noise. Sounded like the u-joint was going to jump out.
I finally gave in and did a rollout measurement.
Old school way, too.
Put an expensive piece of masking tape at 6 o'clock on each rear wheel, with
another piece on the ground right under it.
Rolled the truck forward exactly one tire revolution on one side.
Put another piece of tape down right there.
Went around to the other side and moved the truck until that wheels tape was
exactly at 6 o'clock and taped the ground.
Measured the rollout on each side.
Guess what?
I had more stagger than a winged sprint car (1&1/2")
No wonder the posi hated my guts.
Same brand, and same size tire. Just a different batch.
Bought a new pair and put them on.
Smooooth!
Should have saved the tires for the trailer, but NOOooo, I had to sell them
off a year ago.

The Lark rims are too narrow for the 205's. A wider rim for 5 1/2 or 6" will
actually increase the effective diameter of the tire.
