Please ID Stude V8 - P9745I

Joel 14 April 2005 05:29:37
Looking to identify Studebaker V8 marked P9745I. It is a full flow
block. Has 2BBL and truck 5 speed.

Thanks,
Joel

Looks like a 63 289. Nice combination for a truck. What are you going to
do with it?

Thanks Bo. A friend of mine has it and has offered to sell it to me.
Which heads are normally on this motor?

There were 3 heads available for the standard 289 engine, depending on
several different factors, including what they had available on the
production line that day. 1557580 7 and 7.5 to 1, 1557571 8.25 to 1,
1557579 8.25 to 1. Then to, if over the years they were switched out, for
some reason, it could have just about anything on it.

Of course, the book is a little confusing, too. In the Jet Thrust section
it lists the first two as 9 to 1 and 10.25 to 1 respectively. The only
difference I can think of right off hand would be the HD valves, HD valve
springs, roto caps and thin steele gasket as being different?

In either event, it would be a good motor to have if the price is right.
You didn't say if you, or your friend new any of the history behind it?
Mileage, if it runs, etc.

Bo

The JT engine used flattop pistons, that would account for the
difference in compression ratio between std. and JT with the same head
castings.

 Nate,

Good point about the flat top pistons. Does this mean then that there are
no major differences in the heads beyond the couple of things I mentioned?

There are no difference in the raw castings, mostly just the valve
springs.

That is what I was mostly thinking, too.
