Engine Color

Joel Iowa Studebaker Fan ! 10 April 2005 18:58:36
Hello going to be painting the 6 cylinder out of my 58 Champion in a
few weeks. What is the engine color suppost to be ? Some say silver but
the engine that is in is Studebaker green...But the engine was a crate
motor put in years ago...

Thanks

It is "supposed" to be silver. It's not a real bright irridescent silver
like Hi-temp aluminum paint. It actually has a purplish-grey cast to it.
Here's a good webpage of what it should look like... (although this is a
V-8)

 Howdy again fellers,

My second question today (are we allowed more than one per day? *G*) is
about the proper engine color for Wilber the '57 Transtar. Weather
permiting, Sat. I'm heading over to pick up a rebuilt 259 for him and
would llike it to be the correct color BEFORE I put it in. All the
lillistrations I've seen, shows what appears to be an orangeish red
color. Some how, that dosen't seem right. Anyone of y'all know for
sure what color the '57 truck engines are suposed to be?

Thanks,
Glenn

One of my rust bucket Hoosier parts trucks is a 3E38 with 56K miles(2ton
formerly a dump truck) and the engine is black. Course its had at
least 4 owners I know of.

Per Fred Foxes article on 57-58 3E series Transtars Vol 27 # 12 "Most times
truck engines were painted the same colors as Studebaker car engines. For
most of 1957, Studebaker engines were painted Turquoise (O'Brien's 5003 -
MAD Turquoise High Intensity Engine Enamel) with black valve covers and
black air cleaner cannisters. The oil pan and radiator fan were either
Turquoise or black. The oil filler cap and most electrical compounds were
black. Late in the 1957 model year, Studebaker replaced the Turquiose paint
with silver-gray color."

If you get a good current paint number for the Turquiose color please let us
know, I will need it for my 2E38, also with a 259, but also a 4 BBL and a 5
spd direct.

I can give you the original Studebaker code for O'Brien's 5003 Turquoise if
that will help.

 Thanks 1ton,

I thought they were turquoise and black like the cars, but was not sure. If
anyone would know for sure, it would be Fred Fox.

Thanks again for finding the info,
Glenn
