What was the first year of the 289?

Don Smith 5 April 2005 23:17:40
A friend has an engine out of a 59 Super Hawk. He was told it was a
289. THe number off the engine is: V420466.

Thanks,

 That's a 259 (or at least started as a 259), but 289 were available
before then.
There was no such thing as a SuperHawk in '59.
I wouldn't be surprised in someone had referred to the GH as a
Superhawk before 1959 - probably when they came out with a blower for
'57.

The first year of the 289 is 1956 (Presidents, optional in Sky and Power
Hawks)

That number is for an early-mid 1959 259cu in. V-8
It is NOT an (original) 289...
It "could" still be a 289 if someone had replaced the crankshaft at some
time. But, that engine was built as a 259.

 Don,

Someone feed your friend a bill of goods.

First off, no such thing as a 1959 Super Hawk. Silver Hawk Coupe body style
were the only Hawks built that year. Second, all V8 1959 Hawks came with
259. As I recall, the only thing you could order a 289 for in 1959 was the
trucks? Third, a 289 engine code starts with P unless it is an Avanti
engine. V420,466 indicates that it is indeed a 1959 standard 259 V8. 1959
259 engine sequence #'s 418,701 to 454,699.

Oh, yes. First year of the 289 would be 1956.

It sticks in my mind that the 289 was standard in Sky Hawks and only 259s
were offered in Power Hawks.

 'Careful, Bo; don't forget the 1955 President 259s had a "P" prefix,
too. Always a fooler and a good trivia question. BP

 Bob,

This is the reason that God put you here for us. To remind us of all the
things we forget. I just don't know what we would do without you. God love
you.
