Flex Plate Bolts for Tranny Swappin'

Patrick W Lee 5 April 2005 17:07:37
Long story short- the original 259 in my '56 wagon has a bad main or
rod bearing, so I'm swapping in a good 259 from a '59 Hawk. I got the
'59 motor w/ the tranny still attached, so I thought it'd be a quick
weekend swap. Turns out the tranny's tail shafts are different, so to
make things 'easy' I decided to just swap transmissions w/ the original
one out of the wagon.

I did get the flexplate bolts off w/o pulling the pan off, as I've read
on the NG that one must do. It wasn't difficult at all w/ the starter
removed. I'm now ready for reassembly, and am wondering if I need to
replace the the six flex plate bolts? I know some of the new modern
cars use torque-to-yield bolts which stretch upon being torqued down,
and can't be reused. Are the original flex plate bolts like this? Or
can I just reassemble w/ red loctite?

Also, has anyone 'successfully' tightened the flex plate bolts without
pulling the pan? I *really* don't want to have to do that if I can
avoid it. Thanks in advance...

Patrick,
First of all... are BOTH cars automatics? If so, there was no need to
pull the flex-plate. Are you really talking about the Torque Converter
bolts?
Are you swapping the bellhousings also? If so, you will HAVE TO dial
indicate the (56's) bellhousing to be sure it's centered with the
crankshaft.
The flex-plate bolts (and TC bolts also) are re-useable. Yes, use the
loctite. IF both cars were autos, consider stacking BOTH the flexplates
when you reinstall. I often use 2 flexplates as they are somewhat prone
to breaking.

Yep- pardon my mistake, I meant the torque converter bolts (6 of 'em).
Both trannies are autos. Not swapping bellhousings - keeping those
attached to their respective trannies.

I thought I could reuse the bolts as you suggest... but do I still have
to pull the pan? :-/

Thanks!

On a related note... If anyone is interested in the '56 259 and the '59
Auto tranny, please let me know! I'd like to sell 'em soon. Thanks!

You don't need to pull the pan to install TC bolts. You can access them
through the hole for the starter, and by removing the bell housing
splash shield. The TC bolts are reuseable. It's a bit of a pain to turn
the engine over by hand, so you can get to all the bolts easily.

The only time you must pull the pan, is to change the Flex-plate to
crank bolts (flywheel bolts). The rear main bearing cap must be removed.

I just looked in the parts books (55-58 and 59-64). The transmissions
use the SAME bellhousing. So, you can use the 1959's engine and
(original '59) bellhousing- and the transmission from the '56 should
bolt right up. The '59 bellhousing will NOT need to be dial indicated.

I'm pretty sure you will not need to change the torque converter either.

The bellhousing that came with the '59s engine (originally) needs to
stay on that engine. If you swap the whole tranny/bellhousing from the
'56, and bolt it to the '59 engine, The 56's bellhousing MUST be
centered with the crankshaft. This involves removing the dowel pins from
the '59s block, (lightly)bolting up the 56's bellhousing, and using a
dial indicator on the crankshaft to make sure it's centered. You can
nudge the bellhousing around with a heavy hammer. Once centered, bolt it
down solidly (and recheck your measurements). Then re-drill the dowel
pin holes to 3/8" and install larger pins.

**Note. The dowel pin holes must be perfect. You can't do it with just a
3/8" drill bit. You have to use a 11/32" drill bit- and a 3/8" reamer.

Boy, that sure sounds complicated. I think I'll be swapping
bellhousings!! Thanks for everyone's help.

If you haven't removed the bellhousing from the 59 motor, don't! Unless you
really want to do all that dial indicating jazz. I've never had to dial
indicate one unless I've had to change out bellhousings, or had to use one
of the unfinished NOS ones you could get from SASCO.

As long as the 59 engine and bellhousing are a matched pair and there hasn't
been any problems previously with broken flex plates you should be all right
with just swapping in the short shaft 56 trans.

Of course, if you haven't installed the engine, yet, this would be a good
time to do all of that jazz, to give yourself that extra piece of mind.

 I should clarify - I will be keeping the '59 bellhousing w/ the '59
motor, and just swapping the trannies. I definitely don't want to go
through the hassle of dialing in a different bellhousing.

I sure am glad I posted this question!! I had no idea what I was in
for. Thanks again for all the advice,

Patrick
