It might be a good idea to check with the Park officials. They had a lot of
damage last year right before the NCSDC meet in Asheville. I have heard it
is going to take over into the summer to get it all opened back up.

Thanks Freddy, thats the site I was reading today.
Theres a thread going on over on the E-Bay message board where people from
around the US and Canada are talking about their favorite bike rides, and
this is one of the best according to them.

Robert, the Blue Ridge Parkway is one of my favorite roads in the world.
Beautiful road, stunning views, tunnels, the Lynn Cove Viaduct, hiking
trails, camping, just a wonderful place. When you do have to get off it
US 221 pretty much runs parallel to it, and that is an interesting old
mountain highway and fun to drive too.

Have fun, and don't forget Skyline Drive.

 Paul,

Would it give any excitement to someone jaded with driving California
Highway 1
and the Sierras?
I've heard about it, but that's a long way to go just for a pretty
drive.

It's been a few years since I drove California 1 from Monterrey to the
Hearst Castle, but my recollection is that it is a more exciting drive than
Skyline Drive/Blue Ridge Parkway. They are both great rides.

I drove that Cal 1 from HalfMoon Bay to Monterrey and Pebble Beach once
about 15 years ago. It was the most beautiful drive I'd ever taken.

Until we'd go around a curve on the mountainside and be in fog so dense
you couldn't see the guardrails....much less the 200-300 ft drop down
to the ocean just on the other side of that guardrail...then it bacame
the scariest drive I"d ever taken!!

All in all...I"d still do it again in a heartbeat!! I have some of the
most gorgeous photos I've ever taken anywhere!

That road is so famous, but a shorter, and more frightening (for the
few who tend to be that way) is going north of SanFran on Cal Hwy 1 to
Fort Ross to visit.
Then come back a few miles to 12, head inland over the mountains and
pick up the road to Calistoga and tour the wine country back to SF.

I do not advise fatlanders doing this in reverse, for obvious reasons!

I can top that, and on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

One night I was driving my Champ along the Parkway, it was a very dark
night with patches of heavy fog (actually the road was going through
CLOUDS). So I'm driving along, go around a curve into this super dense
fog... and my lights go out.

Needless to say I stopped, and after a minute the lights came back on,
so a cautiously continued on my way. A couple of minutes later the
lights went out again. I finally figured out that if I didn't use the
brights the lights would stay on (and of course I didn't use the brights
in the dense fog!), and I got back to my motel without further incident.

I've since added some wiring and a relay so the halogen high beams no
longer trip the breaker.

That's bad, Jeff, but vision bit o' fun Jane and I experienced last
year in Ireland:

Leaving Dingle (fire away, Calvin!) and heading towards
Castlegregory....
We are on a Very Twisty 1 1/2 lane 'road' about 200 feet above Dingle
Bay. No shoulders, just rock walls at the road's edge. Driving on the
left side in a RHD car. Sheep in the road, sheep falling off the
mountain into the road. Sheep falling into Dingle Bay I suppose as
well. As we are climbing up the pass we entered some really dense fog,
and could barely see, when all of the sudden we do see
something...Headlights. On a tour bus. A BIG US sized tour bus! And
coming at us fast!

Let's just say that when we returned the car, we are glad the rental
agency didn't look at the left side of the car, or at the bottoms of
the car seats!

My first experience driving on the left was after 24 hours w/o sleep. I
had to work my way across London on narrow streets, with my wifen
having hads the good sense to fall asleep.
All went fine tjhereafter until a week later when driving avcross what
seemed to be a narrow bridge another driver came from the other
direction. I said to myself, "If I go slow we will probably survice."
We did.

I called about the damage a couple of weeks ago, as I am planning to
put on the Pre Tri State tour again, using the Parkway. I was told
that the parkway should be complete reopened by the end of the summer
and that my September dates should be okay. The end of the summer seems
to mean the end of August.

Robert, also do not forget to climb Mt. Mitchell. It is the tallest
peak east of the Mississippi. Very steep climb from the parkway, but
worth the time. Great views from the top! Joe Roberts

Is I-40 part of that? When I was coming back the southbound lane looked
like it was still in the process of sliding down the side of the mountain,
at one point it was completely gone. This was about 40 miles north of
Asheville.
