Sunday Follies

Jeff Rice 4 April 2005 00:21:28
Got up early today and hustled out into the shop.
Spent all morning making cast iron chips.
Interesting to see the varieties of the quality of cast iron in Stude intake
manifolds.
Some cut very easy. and some are nasty hard with sand type grit in them.
Did the hogging out operation on 16 of the 2bbl to AFB manifolds and
finished two WCFB to AFB setups for customers.
Went outside to get some lunch and saw that it was 2pm (danged time
change)...
Quit for the day and went in and cleaned up and ate lunch.
Took the truck for a spin that ended up lasting 40 miles.
Didn't want to come home to clean up the shop.
Glad I went out though..

Took the truck for a spin that ended up lasting 40 miles.

I got Goliath out, cleaned his end of the shop. Of course, I had to take
him for a spin, since he was out, and all. Am about to back 'Sheba into Big
G's area, so I can clean her end of the shop.
Didn't want to come home to clean up the shop.

Wonder if I will have the discipline to finish cleaning the shop if I back
'Sheba all the way out of the shop, down to the highway for a little drive.
Or, should I finish cleaning the shop, then take her for a spin? Decisions,
decisions.

Film at 11.

 Jeff,
Funny....I've been saying the same thing since I started porting Stude
heads. But all the Stude guys think I'm nuts! "Studebaker was better
than that!" The cast iron ingredients "are" different batch to
batch. Some good....some not so good.
Anything from different sparks to different corrosion rates.
If it's a little rainy out...freshly ground ports (in the garage and
inches apart!), you look the next day....one head still has nice shiny
ports and the other head has a nice even thin coat of rust on the
fresh material.
So....some times it does pay to "pick and choose" your parts.
I know...I know...the manifolds were concidered as secondary items to
blocks and heads!! Probably not.
As as well liked Stude guy...thanks for stating this fact.

 No pic's here <grrr>..
But I did get a letter from Olympus saying they had my camera and were going
to fix it under warranty.
I should expect it within the next 30 days.
Looked more like a ransom letter <lol?>

I thought I had wrecked (dulled) my end mill bit on a couple of manifolds,
they were so hard.
I adjusted the feed way down to account for it.
Then I fell asleep watching it cruise through the next one....like butter.
Jeff (But it all looks the same when I blow my nose <lol>) Rice

Maybe now that you have all those manifolds done, you can start on the fuel
pump project? I had to tighten up the little bolts on the Hawk's
less-than-six month old pump once again before heading to High Springs as
it was starting to leak fuel AGAIN! And this one has already been
replaced under warranty for leaking oil! BTW, missed ya there..what a car
collection and shop! If I wasn't so allergic to the "J" word I would ask
him for one...but right now I have a shop full of Studes, anyway.

Which Olympus camera do you have?

I found that their CCD is far superior
to other mfg's. If I take a simple a
picture using a Nikon D-100 and the
Olympus C-2500L, the 2500 has a better
color profile imbedded in it then the Nikon.

I would like to shoot more with the 2500
but they only have one lens.. The othe
drawback is the Oly is 2.5mp and th
Nilon is 6.1. Now Nikon is possibly
coming out with 9MP to 12 MP to replace
the D-100. The new Nikon 2DX is 4.6 MP
a drop of 2 MP over their last high end
machine.

He'd love to, but he has a secret carb-related project he's dying to
finish. <G>

Well, I haven't been able to get the broken tap out...yet.
Set it aside and worked on others...
I can do all the hand grinding on 4 manifolds and then my right hand goes
numb.
Pretty good at doing the grinding on 2 manifolds and then drilling 2, and
then grinding two....
Trying to get all the drilling and grinding done today and leave the bead
blasting and painting for next weekend..
Looking forward to South Bend!

 Had a busy weekend.
3 showings on the house on Saturday, and one today.
Had to skip our chapter meeting as it is just goofy around here...
Got out this morning and did some work on that Ford pickup.
Built a dual purpose shield for the vacuum booster/master cylinder..

Some pic's are up at:
http://racingstudebakers.com/stl-web/bulletin/bb/viewtopic.php?p=5337#5337

Thought I did well without hurting myself, and then POR15 got me...
I was welding the tabs on the underside of the frame, and when I lifted my
head
up to see what I was doing, I stabbed my temple on a POR15 stalagmite
(stagmite?)..
Hurt like the dickens, and when I went into the house I got a
"Don't bleed in here" warning from the wife..
Didn't even know I was bleeding.

asbestos shingle cutter, cuts hardi-plank just dandy. for $30.00 I
don't have to wear hardi-board dust!

I've never been in a cave, but I know that when the "mites" go up, the
tites" come down.
