E-Bay scam artists(sorta OT)

Robert Black 2 April 2005 03:44:28
I just spent the afternoon at work(yea,I got a good job),reading two of
E-Bays posting boards,E-Bay Motors and Motorcycle Boulevard. If your ever
bored sometime give them a look, lots of good stuff.
But it occured to me that if I was new to E-Bay and was reading these boards
I wonder if Id ever start. According to some of the regulars on both boards
it seems theres more scaming going on than ever, and E-Bay seems to have
little incentive to stop it,even though they claim to be trying.Think of the
clown who hit the "Buy it now"on 200 cars in one day.All those relisting
fees.
But there was a link to a newspaper article I wish Id saved(shouldn't be
hard to find) about one guy from New Hampshire thats doing six years for
mail fraud. He was making 30k a month.100% profit because he was selling
computers and parts, but not sending anything. He had many different E-Bay and
Yahoo idenities that hed build up a few decent feedbacks by buying cheap
1.00 items just for the feedbacks.Whenever he could steal a credit card
number.hed open a new E-Bay or Yahoo auction account.
But bottom line is on big ticket items,if its way to good to be true its a
scam.Seems a lot of folks who were greedy and stupid enough to think that
they just bought a nearly new Harley for 7500US,but the seller and the bike
happen to be vacationing in France, and the reason for selling is its way to
hard to register it there.
Anyone on here have any real bad experiences?
Its all another great thing about this NG and the Stude people in general.A
scammer wouldn't have to rip to many of us off before the word was out on
him.
I think its like JP said about E-Bay,you really do need to use common sense.

There is no relisting fee if you file a non paying bidder claim.

So far, nothing but very positive ebay experiences. Once, I thought I had a
deadbeat vendor; turned out he had just lost some close relatives in the
9/11 murders; and it took a little longer for him to get the item sent to
me. (I ended up being relieved that I only gently reminded him that he was
tardy; at the time I wasn't aware of his loss!)

Just a note....most of you may know of the offshore scam ebay bidders who
tell the seller they will send a cashiers check for more than the bid
amount, and that the extra should be sent to their US based shipper or
agent. The "cashiers checks" are said to usually be very good conterfeits
that have fooled some banks, until the bank tried to process it through the
"issuing" bank.

Well, some of the scammers are now using conterfeit US Postal Money Orders,
and being outside the US, they have little to fear for the stiff fines and
jail sentences for counterfeiting those money orders. The clerks at my local
Post Office have seen and caught a few, and said they were pretty well done
but the paper used was too shiny when compared to a genuine Postal Money
order.

its not just cars.......

I had not one, but TWO people from the Netherlands.... wanna pay me $17.50
for a beat up former library book about police cars.....

what set my red alert off was that it was 2 people....... a man, and a
lady,
both the same day, same wording in e-mails.....

they couldn't bid, I have all foreign bidders blocked.
