1994 Acheiva airbag replacement.

GAlan 2 April 2005 09:22:55
I bought a 1994 Acheiva 4 door with minor front damage for $200.
(Less than 90,000 miles on it! SOHC 4-cylinder and auto.)
It rammed a Subaru from behind at around 10 MPH, the Subbie
bumper overrode the Olds' bumper, taking out the hood,
right front fender, lights, AC condenser, radiator, windshield
washer tank and parts of the air intake ducting. (And various
other little bits I've bought replacements for.)

And it also triggered the airbag. :(

So far I've purchased most of the needed parts from wrecking yards.

For the airbag system, I found a 1994 Acheiva 2-door that
was never wrecked. (It apparently suffered a Quad 4 and auto
trans failure, going by the bits and pieces of both piled in
the trunk.) From that car I got the airbag, airbag controller,
and the front end sensor. All the info I've found says there's
a Passenger Compartment Sensor under the console between the
front seats. Guess what? It ain't there on that 2-door!
All the airbag electronics parts use yellow connectors,
or have yellow tape wrapped on the wiring. There's nothing
yellow under the console, nor is there anything bolted
to the floor under the console except the shifter.

I haven't started to remove the crunched parts from the
4-door, nor have I removed the console from it, so I don't
know if it has a Passenger Compartment Sensor under it.
I'm getting as many parts as possible before I begin
work on the car.

Can anyone confirm or deny the existence and/or location
of this sensor? Do any other GM cars use the exact same
sensor? (The yard printed me out a list of other models
that use the same airbag control module.)

The other sensor I'm hazy on is the Arming Sensor. I've
seen the Parts Locator Manual for 1994 and 1995 cars.
For GM they're bloody useless. Right before the Achieva
section is a Ford section with exquisitely detailed
illustrations of where the parts are. So what does the
GM section have? Crude schematics with circled X's for
the airbag components. The front end sensor's X is nowhere
near its actual location. I've seen better "treasure"
maps drawn by four year old children.

The location of the arming sensor is given as "Behind
right side of dash." Now isn't that *helpful*?

Do I even need to replace the Arming Sensor?

I've been told that I must only use parts from the
1994 or 1995 model years because they have single
airbags. 1992 and 1993 have no airbags and 1996+
have dual airbags.

Please someone tell me the REAL, TRUE story on
what MUST be replaced after the airbag goes off
so that the system will be restored to proper
operation.

P.S. I've been doing auto repair (usually on cars
much worse off than this Acheiva) for many years,
so none of it is beyond my skills. Fortunately up
till now I've managed to avoid airbag equipped
ones. This was just too good a deal to pass up!

P.P.S. I'm also looking at a 1998 Pontiac Bonneville
with the 3.8L V6. Very low miles but has a knock
in the engine. Should be simple compared to this
Achieva Airbag Voodoo!

P.P.P.S. The airbag, dismounted from the wheel, looks
a heck of a lot like a landmine...
