Why is my "check engine" light on most off the time?

 I dont get it when th light is on it runs better than the rare times the
light goes off. No one else seems to know either. Also was wondering what
the cost is to replace the starter? Seems to be missin around 45 mph. Any
comments appreciated on my 1996 Montecarlo Z34. Thanks Jennifer

 Missing suggest cleaning fuel injectors. also I had a bad coil (1 of 3) on
