Mitsubishi galant 98 gear issue when starting

Machismo 8 April 2005 22:52:09
hello all, my galant is having some issue and i dont know what to get
checked. when I initially start my car for the first time in the day it
start ok, and when I backup from my driveway and change from reverse to
drive it usually will try to die or stop and once i give gas it will be
ok. This will go on few minutes in the first intial startup, if i stop
and go it will happen also, and sometimes it will give a big jerk when
I change from reverse to gas, or even at a stop and go. After 10-15
mins it seems to be ok. if anyone can point me in a direction what i
need to get checked or do will really appreciate it. Its a 98 Galant,
Auto Transmission.

Try a carbon cleaning and then change plugs. Reply again after that has been done. There are a couple of more things I suspect, but I'd like to suggest the simple stuff first. While you are there, check all the hoses and vac lines carefully for cracks. Disconnect them one by one and inspect them. That means looking at the underside....

Yes, a NT galant is a turd, but at least say that....I personally feel that
people buying a Galant or Eclipse non-turbo sold the rest of us out.

I got the plugs changed and fuel system cleaned, and the car runs a lot
smoother and pickup is way better, still though on initial startup when
the enigne is cold and when I back out of driveway it still stops the
engine. tia.

The carbon cleaning I was referring to isn't a fuel system cleaning. No
biggie. I was suggesting you get the gunk off the Idle Speed Controler
(ISC). This is a small, plunger type device at the throttle body. It is held
on with two, 10 mm bolts and an electrical connector. It will probably
require removing the battery to get to it. After it is removed, try cleaning
it with some type of solvent, even brake parts cleaner and a towel. Don't
clean the electrical connector. This job can be done in 10 minutes and
doesn't require any great mechanical skill. It should resemble this:

http://dmtalon.v8eaters.com/ISC.html

The ISC is used to allow air to bypass the throttle plate when closed. I'm
guessing that the load from going into reverse and the ISC sticking is the
problem. It receives a command to go to a certain step by the ECU based on
the current conditions. The ECU doesn't know if it actually does. Most of
the time the plunger can be cleaned and it will fix the problem. In other
cases it has to be disassembled and the gunk on the electromagnetic plates
needs cleaning. In severe cases the electrical connections are fried and you
will need a new one. In the severe cases, however, the car won't idle at
all.

thanks for all the help, i am not sure if I excatly foud th ISC like
you suggested, but I removed the battery and I cleaned all the gunk in
the surrounding area, and everywhere else i could see, I tighted all
the hoses and the car seems to be almost good, once in a while when
going from fast to low speed it might just stutter a small bit, but
this is a huge improvement. I will still keep looking to make sure i
find ISC to make that clean aswell. I have a chilton's manual and that
was not help in finding ISC either. But thanks for all the help.
