In fact, there are two different rubber buffer thingys: one which sits> directly on the shaft of the shock absorber (you just mentioned it) and> another one which sits between the spring and the car body. Sorry, I> don't know the proper english name for it.>

The ones at the top I believe are simply rubber suspension bushes, it
was all I had to ask for when I put new suspension on the golf. The
bushes inside the strut are 'bump stops' and often combined with dust
covers to protect the shock absorber.
With regards to the front a year back the garage mentioned the front mounts> > had excess play, but another garage said this was normal on a golf when its> > lifted up. I am not sure. The play in the front mounts does not mean anything. For> example, if I "swing" my Vento, the front mounts will have some 5mm> play.

As you jack the car up they will have some play as the top mounts don't
bolt up, they are simply pushed up into the inner wing which is shaped
to hold them. When the car is jacked up so they are quite free to move
around. The key question is how much does the top mount itself move on
the strut shaft at the top.
