Mayfair '98 Rear Windows

Tc 20 April 2005 22:08:47
Hello Readers, Does anyone know if the window seals on the opening rear
quarter lights are different to the fixed rear windows on the Mini Mk IV?
There may not be much in it but rain don't need much to get in!

I'm trying to find out where the water comes in!

TIA

No, They are totally differant. The fixed rear window is held in by the seal
hicj=h wraps around the body lip and the glass - the opening window seal
just wraps around the body lip and the glass butts up to it.

Buy a new pair, you can get the correct seal from autojumbles cut to length
for about £8 per side, its probably letting in water due to deteriation,

Steve.

I've just replaced the seals for the opening rear windows on my Mini
Clubman. Seven quid each from The Minishop London. Doddle to fit and
stopped the leaks on both sides.

Thanks readers - final question before I commit. If the chrome trim is
taken off the opening windows, and the correct seals are fitted to the
shell, will the glass that has been recovered fit between into the channel
in the rear windows? Opening quarter lights aren't really necessary on a
Mini.

TIA

That depends on where you live, dunnit?
I wouldn't drive a Mini here in the heat without opening rear quarter light
windows for ventilation.

As I recall the chrome strip surrounding the glass of the opening rear
windows on my '78 Mini Clubman is fixed in place and not removable,
especially towards the rear where the catch is. The chrome strip butts up
against the seal which is pressed into the body shell. The original seal
was one length therefore there was a small gap where the ends joined and
it was at this point where it leaked. The new strip was a continous loop
therefore no gap and no leak.
