1997 Cougar won't start

Scott 14 April 2005 07:03:21
 I have a 1997 Merc Cougar 30th Anniv. with 4.6L V8. Recently, she won't
start when I turn the key. There is a sparking-type popping sound coming
from under the dash board back behind the emergency brake. I cannot see the
device to well, but it appears to be black and gray and has lots of wires
coming out of it. My ford service cd is no use here, nor is my Hanes book.
I have had the alternator replaced, the battery replaced twice, all of my
fuses are good. It started out as an intermittent issue and now is a
permanent one. I appreciate any thoughts here. I am driving a truck in the
mean time, and I sure do miss my cat.

About 6 months prior to this, I had a mechanic replace the electronic
ignition switch (a tan thing with a movable lever inside it, and it mounts
near the steering column) Since that was done, my cat has not been the
same. She makes a repeated bong sound when the door is open, headlights are
off, and the keys are out of the ignition. The mechanic does not believe me
that for the first seven years of my cats life, she only bonged when the
keys were left in it and the door was open, or when the lights were left on.
I am afraid he replaced it with a close match and not the exact part.

Thank you,

Scott K.

The bonging is most likely due to the fact that the wire that detects the
key is in the ignition has come adrift ( most likely when the tech replaced
the switch) The alarm module thinks the key is in and when the interior
light comes on it bongs.

As for the snap crackle pop under the dash that isn't much to go on.

I presume the car is not CRANKING(?) Not "starting" is a bit wider topic.

I would get someone one who can trace out the ignition/start circuit and see
if the solenoid is getting power when the key is cranked and that the
neutral safety switch is operating correctly. Proper wiring diagrams are a
big help too. StuK
