Q re: fuel starvation '67 Mustang

I'm fairly certain this is the correct diagnosis...

When I nail it in 1st (which is very low - 5000 = ), and the car holds
traction, my 302 will get starved for fuel after 4000 or so. It just cuts
out, and comes back once I ease back on the throttle for a moment. It does
this very suddenly. It won't do it all the time, but recently improved
traction has increased the frequency with which it happens. It's done it in
2nd as well, but only once, up a steep on-ramp with it mashed to the floor.

The long block is stock, except for a mild cam. Vacuum is good. The
Performer 600 carb is at factory settings, except for step-up springs that
allow more fuel in sooner. I put the carb on about 5000 miles ago. I don't
these springs are a radical departure from what it came with. They are one
level "looser" than factory for this carb.

Ignition is solid, the dizz works fine, and the advance curve is right about
where it should be. I run a mechanical pump and a fancy shmancy cartridge
type, clear fuel filter. The element is fairly new. And I just replaced
the sender, and re-checked all the lines, but it did this before that,
anyway. No signs of gunk or sediment when I had the tank out.

The pump is a stock replacement type mechanical pump... ya think it's maybe
not keeping up, and need to go electric?

Thanks!
