Steering Column Assy.

 I replaced the tumbler assy. on a 1989 Caddy Fleetwood, but have been
unable to keep the top part of the column shaft stationary to use a
spring compressor to put the "c" ring in place. The car has a
telescopic wheel. How do I keep it stationary, or what else do I do
to replace the "c" ring?

Just did this job last weekend on a gm....I used a "clamshell"
bearing puller, put the wheel nut on a few threads, and threaded two
pcs of allthread through the clamshell on either side to contact the
plate, then push ’til it goes as far as it will move. This should push
is slightly past the groove in the shaft for the ring. Put the c ring
on the shaft before the nut/puller, or you’ll most likely kill it
trying to open it up to put it over the shaft.
