2001 Buick front turn signal bulb replacement

Ed MacAlmon 2 April 2005 03:05:02
My right front signal bulb is burned out. Can anyone tell me how to
replace it? Obviously the good old days of opening the hood, twisting
out the bulb holder, replacing the bulb and reinstalling the holder are
long gone. It looks like a sealed unit, but surely that can't be true.
Any help appreciated.--Ed

The same is true of the 01 LeSabre Custom rear turn signal. I understand the turn signal bulb doubles as the running lights so it is on all the time unless flashing. I didn't see any reply posted after 8 months so apparently this is either too simple or too complicated. Hope you got it figured out by now.
I'm going to unbolt the entire light assembly and see if the outer lens comes off for access. It is the only fastener accessible from the back and none are accessible from the outside. The portion of the light assembly visible from inside the trunk appears to be moisture sealed. The front light assembly is probably the same. If you get it apart to replace a bulb, be sure you reseal the unit before re-attaching it to the body. Elsewhere on the web I've read horror stories about the complexity of the circuit and difficulty replacing the flasher. If it isn't the bulb, you will have to take it to a very sharp mechanic or maybe the dealer.
They just don't make cars to be repaired, they make them to be assembled quickly with proprietary parts and tools, like major brand PC's did for a long time before they started using generic Asian parts. This practice is anti-consumer and generates far more revenue than the original sale over time. Printer makers almost give away ink jet printers because they have you over a barrel now on ink cartridges that check for manufacturer codes.
Circuit boards and microprocessors in cars should make repairs cheap and easy but just the opposite is happening. The government needs to protect consumers from automakers who sell vital $3 to $10 proprietary integrated circuit cards for $100 to $800. Overly complicated turn signal circuitry is typical of this needless complexity and repair {censored}. Another example on this car is the defective rear power window regulator which costs $300.

The only way to avoid this rip-off is to drive a 1958 Checker Excalibur (taxi cab) or '52 Plymouth. These were the last cars made that weren't designed to fail. [I saw a moving '52 Plymouth on CNN yesterday in recent footage taken in Cuba.] We are all at the mercy of frequently unethical auto makers who are squeezing independent mechanics out of business as well. The real problem may be a lot deeper than a simple bulb failure.
