I have a 1996 Buick Regal. And you can feel the transmission go into gear
and the motor bog down. But when you give it gas it goes no where, but you
can feel it trying to pull. I have checked the fluid and to see if the
brakes are locked up and they are not. I have jacked up the car and the
wheels turn, and in any gear one goes one way and the other side goes the
oppsite way. I am lost. Thanks

I have a 1996 Buick Regal. The transmission goes into gear and you can feel
it wanting to pull, but it goes nowhere. I have checked the fluid and it is
fine, and also I have checked to see if the brakes froze up on it and they
are free. I jacked the car up and the transmission will not turn the
wheels over. I can turn the wheels in any gear by hand, one will go one
way and the other goes the oppsite way. Also the security light is on, and
it will not go off, can that have something to do with it? Thanks

You didn't by any chance notice that this is"alt. auto.dodge?
Last time I checked Dodge and Buick were from different manufacturers.

Well, if you'd tell us whether its a manual or automatic it would be easier
to diagnose.

Manual:
If you can select fwd or reverse gear, then your clutch is releasing. If you
let the clutch out and the car moved a little bit, you clutch is slipping.
If the car wonlt move at all, you've either
a) ripped the center out of the clutch plate; or
b) broken an inner CV shaft in the diff.
Both a) and b) happen if you have a habit of doing burnouts and jackrabbit
starts.

Automatic:
If you can actually select fwd or reverse gear, you should hear some kind of
thump when the selection happens. If not,
c) have the trans fluid level checked, or
d) the trans has failed, expect $$$$ to fix, or
e) see b) above. Can happen with normal driving, but very rarely.

check the fluid level.. if it's ok, you might try and remove the connector
for the overdrive. I forgot the terminology, but you remove the connector
and you should be able to drive again, except you won't get the 4th gear
(overdrive)

That could be a broken cooler line. Or a pressure leak pissing it up
there.

I would recommend you actually stick your head under there to see where
it is coming from. It could be a $5.00 fix or the tranny shop could
sell you a whole new tranny because you don't know where the leak is.
Shops tend to take advantage of folks that say 'it's broke, fix it'.

Sounds like a broken cooler line to the radiator. Don't drive it, repair
the line and refil.

Usually that lead is your power steering hose. It is very rare for
the transmission O ring to give up, except with radiator change.

Can this car run 500000 miles with the original fillup. The Bently manual

VW likes to claim that their ATF is lifetime in some later models but those
of us with Eurovans (in which the AT tends to be unreliable) change it every
40K. Even VW has come around to that idea (my service manual says every 40K
but my dealer said "Nah every 100K is fine" and for most other VWs it
doesn't say at all).

In a Golf, unless it gives some maintenance interval in your maintenance
manual, I'd say every 60K or 80K would be good, definitely every 100K for
sure.

It will fit but I think you will find the electronics are different,
possibly axles also. Check with a salvage yard for interchange info.

Obviously when the car is running, the tranny fluid is running through and
leaking from where it's running through. Have your friend clean the outside
of the tranny then observe where it leaks from. Thats where I would start.

I have a 1993 honda civic 5 speed. The clutch pedal was losing its
clearance or should I say its distance from where it is engaged until it
hits the fire wall. Now it won't let me shift into gear. I asked a
mechanic and he was not sure but did look up and said that the
transmission was hydraulic. Any idea of what this could be and cost. Is
it something I could do? I thought it would just be a clutch pedal
adjustment. Thanks, Bill

There's TWO brake fluid reservoirs under your hood. The tiny one is for
your CLUTCH. Fill it up with brake fluid but don't overfill and don't
spill. Just use any DOT3 brake fluid.
Why did you wait to do this? It's in your owner's manual and your manual
is available online:
https://techinfo.honda.com/rjanisis/RJAAI001_OMANUAL.asp

There's a SLIM chance your clutch will start to work again. It will most
likely have to be bled by somebody who has experience.

short term, refill the clutch reservoir and bleed the air out.

long term, replace the leaking cylinder.
