E36 BMW 325TDS Auto 1993

Robert G Moore 3 July 2008 11:13:53
Hi, I have the above car and have been running it for nearly 2 years.
The only problem I have is a big niggle really, without any warning the
fuel gauge goes to empty. This happens even on a full tank!

The tank senders seem to be OK, I was wondering whether this is a well
known fault with this model?

Is there a firmware upgrade or an electronic fault that is causing this?

I have run out of diesel a few time because of this and it's really
annoying.....

More likely a bad connection to the sendor, maybe a wired chafing
somewhere?

The wiring to the senders has been checked out and in any case the fuel
gauge rteading changes even when the car is making NO movement at
all.....

 Hi,

I have the same fault with my 1995 manual E36 325 TDS. Gauge is erratic or does not register when tank is full. I've had the car code read and they couldn't really help, but I found the following link:

http://www.bba-reman.com/content.aspx?content=bmw_sensor_faults_and_problems

with the following details:

Incorrect Fuel Gauge Reading
Model: BMW E36 (3 series) including BMW 318ti produced from January 1995
Complaint:
Due to the formation of a non-conducting deposit on the conductor surface of the fuel level sensor, the fuel gauge does not read full after re-fuelling, or the fuel gauge is erratic. Remedy:
Remove and replace both fuel level sensors with “Gold system” sensors.

Although it quotes '95 on, it's likely that 93/94 models have the same tin-plated connectors. I have intermittent problems with poor idle and running that are very similar to the faults expeienced with an Air Flow Meter. However, the '94 325 TDS doesn't have an AFM, so I'm beginning to suspect other poor contacts on the engine sensors (coolant, engine temp etc). Hope this is a start for you.

Jim

i had the same problem once with my BMW 320, the fault was due to one of the wire found broken in the fuel tank float switch. U just need to open out the fuel tank float switch below the rear seat for examination. Note to ensure your fuel tank is at least 1/2 empty before u open the tank float switch.
