| Economy vs. speed Perry Lee 05:16:18 |
| | Here's a question for the group. For years we have been told "the faster you drive, the more fuel you use," because drag increases on the car etc. etc.
My wife and I own a '98 Z3 convertible, 2.8 litre w/a 5-speed manual transmission. We have two different driving styles. My wife gets a kick out of seeing how much mileage she can wring from a tank of fuel. She gently short shifts through the gears, monitors her speed constantly, and believes that a steady, high-gear 60 to 65 mph gets her the best milage of twenty six to twenty seven mpg. My driving style is exactly the opposite, and I squeeze every bit of performance out of it that I can. I go in fast, brake hard and shift at high revs.
We took a fairly long trip through Indiana last weekend, where the speed limit is 70 mph, and traffic was moving between eighty and 85, with a few stretches of 90 mph. Imagine our surprise when my wife flipped the computer read out to mpg, and it read 29.7 mpg! This really seems to fly in the face of what I have been taught about speed and fuel efficiency. Does anyone have an explanation?
BTW the top was down, and fuel type is always constant. We use Chevron Techron 93 octane exclusively, so that shouldn't be a factor.

| BMW 325IC Alami 19:55:40 |
| | I have a 1987 BM325ic and it recently developed a problem with not throttling. I took it to the dealer and they said that there is a vacuum leak in the intake manifold and needs a new oxygen sensor and a tune up, the charge an arm and a leg. So I took the car out and consulted a neighbor who knows a few things (actually a lot) about cars. He tried a few things and figured out that when he disconnects the TBS the car idles fine. He does not think that there is any leak, at least we can not hear anything and he says it does not show the symptoms of a leak. So my question is 1-Have any of you confronted anything like this and do you think the TBS is faulty? 2-How do read the diagnostic codes in this car?
Any help is appreciated

The 735 did come in stick - with a 5 speed available in the US, but it was very rare as very few dealers would risk stocking it. I have a friend with one. I believe his is around a 1996 or so.
You also could do a conversion to stick but due to the electronics involved it's not a trivial conversion. Brett Anderson has done a number of them, including one to a 750iL (V12 long-wheelbase).

| 325xi '02 Power window regulator Guest 03:36:40 |
| | About a week back.. I heard a big click sound while rolling down the power window on the front passenger side. it did roll down but only half way and never rolled back up.
Yesterday, one of my friends sitting on the rear right side of my car discovered that now the rear right side of the window isnt rolling up either.
So, my 02 325xi for some reason has both front and rear right side of the windows not functioning. I dont know if its a co-incidence or whatevr.
I called the dealer and he scheduled me 8 days from now. ( EIGHT DAYS!!!!!......I dont believe this.) I cant even lock my car right now the rear window is all the way down. I asked me if he could give me a higher priority coz I needed to atleast be able to lock my car but NOPE its a first come first serve policy. (what BS!! )
The problem on both the windows seems to be the regulator, not an electric issue. I hear a grinding sound when I try to operate it, but the window doesnt roll up.
Dealer quotes : $350/each for the front and rear . Parts and installation.
Private Party X: $421.78 both front and read. Parts and Installation.
Private Party Y: $193.37 Front, $205 Rear. Parts and Installation.
Private Party Y also mentioned that he has fixed the exact same issue on atleast 5 bimmers in the last 15 days. I dont understand that. Bimmers have that crappy regulators???? according to him yes.
Questions: 1. Is window regulator failing common issue on bimmers?? particularly in my case when two windows failed together, has anybody seen it?
2. The estimates/quotes by the 3 different people above make sense to the group here?? Do you guys agree with the numbers?
3. Is it actually a regulator issue or could be something else?
This is my first bimmer and I just love it (except when it misbehaves like irght now). I am concerned about the reliability of bimmers in general. I have experienced few more issues with my car in the last 8 months. But checking some ratings on reliability on auto.msn.com, gives me some confidence that it may not be all that bad. So is it just MY ride??
I'd appreciate any inputs/thoughts/comments.
Thanks group, in advance.

| E46 Auto lock when you go over 20mph?!?!.....true? Hspadwal@Gmail.Com 23:31:45 |
| | Hello all,
I have read that you can switch on an autolock on the E46 bmw range. when your car goes over a certian speed the doors lock automatically!!
I think its a great idea, but i went on to read that only the dealer can turn this function on?
Is the above true, or is they pulling me leg!
If so, can i turn this on, rather then the dealer?
Thanks
