| Oil Filter Recomendations Please Christopher Muto 22:45:48 |
| | I have an 2001 Audi A4 1.8t (turbo) Quattro. I am sick of paying the high price for the dealer oil changes and want to do it myself. The dealer want $17 for a filter. Can anyone tell me where I can order genuine Audi filters for less or recommend an equally high quality alternative filter. I fear that AutoZone and PepBoys don't sell a quality product. Thank you.

| new purchase 97 1.8t quattro - a few questions Beccak 19:52:43 |
| | Hi,
I just purchased a 97 A4 1.8T quattro a couple of months ago. What a beautiful car. Carfax says it's clean, it came with most of its records, it has low miles (69K now) and is really almost perfect but there are of course a few small issues and I am looking for advice.
I'm not sure if the first issue really is an issue. I think the steering might be a tad floaty and I'm wondering if there's an incipient problem, or if it's just the way the car is. The steering is consistent, the steering wheel doesn't vibrate and it drives perfectly straight. There's an inch or two of travel in the wheel on the freeway. My mechanic doesn't see any problem. It's just that I used to drive a 92 Jetta GL and I feel the steering was tighter on that car. So I figured that the bar would be set the same or higher for the Audi.
Also I feel that the car might tilt a little too much going around corners. Again, I'm comparing it to my Jetta. I've heard that if I go for stiffer shocks or struts, I might get into a whole mess of compensatory changes like different sway bars. Thoughts?
The third issue is that the car is originally from Canada and the speedometer reads in KM/H without any MPH markings. I'm considering replacing the gauge face plate with a US model. It's legal to drive right now, it has a certificate to that effect. For aesthetic reasons I want an OEM plate not an aftermarket plate. I have been told that the way to get an OEM plate is to buy the whole cluster and take the plate from it. Is that possible? I definitely don't want to replace the whole cluster. Also I'm still not sure I *want* to open the dash because I don't think that's been done before and I'm concerned about the integrity of the interior afterwards.
thanks all, Beccak

| 2001 A4 - Lost Ring Under Passenger Seat Weener 12:42:03 |
| | This is going to sound a little strange but here goes...
Today my wife dropped her wedding ring while sitting in the passenger seat of my car. It apparently fell onto the floor and rolled under the seat. Well, 2 hours of searching like crazy, no luck finding the thing.
Any suggestions on where it could possibly have ended up before I take the car in to the dealership to get them to take the seat out and see if anything happens to turn up?

| CD stuck in Player --- 2000 / A4 / 1.8T Thomas G. Marshall 23:49:59 |
| | A standard single-cd player. The cd will not eject when the button is hit. But the cd *will* play ok, so it is not a fuse knocking out the radio.
I cannot seem to find a mechanical eject slot (like the little holes you find on the faceplate of computer cd drives so you can insert a paperclip to force it open).
Any ideas?-----Thanks!
PS. I've had an inordinate number of things go wrong with this car. I started telling the dealership about it, and before I got past "I'm having a lot of trouble with my a4" he asked "is it a 99 or 2000?" Anyone else notice reliability problems these years? My sister in law has a 2002, and is experiencing trouble as well. Please, no "go team" rah rah rah knee-jerk defensiveness needed here.

| A3 Test drive David A Smith 17:22:01 |
| | Hello All. This is the first time I have posted here, and I do so disapointed. I recently went for a test drive in a new A3, 2 litre TDI, DSG (only 443 miles on the clock). We were 3 up, and found that the ride very poor. On the straight on a motorway standard road it was fine but on town roads and changing lanes on the main road the car felt most strange. I find it very difficult to describe the ride. It was as if we were in a plane in turbulance. The suspension felt 'loose', there was a certain amount of wobble or bounce almost as if the car was slipping slightly while bouncing. The best way I can describe it is, it was like driving on hard frozen rutted snow. Which I assure you it wasn't. My wife, who sat in the back to see if the ride was smoothe for passangers who suffer from travel sickness, said she was glad when the drive was over as she felt sick. I am very disapointed as I wanted an Audi. Have we been very unlucky and tested a bad one or are all A3s like this (surely not!)
Your opinions please. Dave

| Strange stalling problem, 1993 90S Av 21:37:25 |
| | A few months ago my car started stalling when idle.. usually a few minutes after I stopped at a traffic light, or almost always as soon as I put it in park.
The gas guage doesn't go all the way over to 'full' when I fill the tank up so I was thinking the two might be related and I have a dying fuel pump.
I know the oil needs to be changed (there's minor smoking), and the hydaulic fluid was quite low (I topped it up yesterday).
Does anyone have any thoughts on what it might be apart from the fuel pump?

| Audi A4 2001 fuel bank fault ScottHardiman 18:33:12 |
| | I had the engine management light come on during a long run out, I had the code diagnosed to a fuel bank fault, could this be related to ignition coils starting to fail ?
I had the light reset & all was well for a couple of weeks until another long run when it came on again.
I've heard that coils can be troublesome. Car is a 2001 A4, 2ltr. My local AUDI dealer won't help out at all unless they do the diagnosis, (they want a lot of money !!)
Any ideas?

| Headrest adjustment on A4 Cabriolet 2004 Myronf@Wi.Rr.Com 21:12:19 |
| | I recently bought this 04 cabriolet and decided that it was time to "fine tune" the headrest adjustment. The manual says to just push in the button on the side. There is no button! I think that I have the sport seats, Is this why there is no button? Anyway, can someone tell me how to adjust the, both up and down, and also in and out?
Thanks Myron

| Meaning of final letter in Audi part number? Peter Thorn 15:21:53 |

| new car odometer Bill T 14:00:58 |
| | How many miles can be on a car for it still to sold as "new"? (I live in California, if that makes a difference.)
I am looking at a new A3 with 55 miles already on the odometer. This is at a big dealership, and so I assume new cars are delivered directly to their doorstep. So is the 55 miles from test drives?
I know this borders on OCD, but my previous new cars had 10 miles each, and 55 sounds not quite virginal.
Thanks.

| Wrong manual...alarm-questions Gio 13:11:51 |
| | I bought myself an 98.5 A4 Avant 2.4 tip-tronic a while ago. Unfortunately the right manual didnt find my way at the purchase - so iґm stuck with a german manual for a pre-98.5 model. That gives me some problems, because the 98.5-model had some minor changes here and there.
Iґve been looking for a manual (for free :o)) on-line, but havent succeeded. So i guess i need to go get me one the money-way. In the meantime, i am having some problems with the alarm-system:
a) Key-less entry works fine, but i cant get the alarm to arm. Normally there should be a LED (or similar) somwhere, that would indicate the alarm/immobilizer is in effect. But i cant find/see any LED anywhere!? Where is it?
b) In the pre-98.5ґ-model there would be a switch in the drivers-side B-panel, that would allow me to switch off the internal sensors for the alarm, if i leave "something/someone alive" in the car. Theres no switch in that place in my car. Where should i look then?
c) Shouldnt the horn sound an audible *bleeb/honk* too, when the alarm arms? (The german manual makes me think "what DID i actually do in german-classes back in school!?" ;o))
Any help with the above is greatly appreciated.
T.I.A. -- Gio
