| | audi 100 C4 2,0E witam

| A6 Auto (Tiptronic) Gear Linkage Loose Jan 00:12:55 |
| | The gear selector on my 1998 A6 (98,000 miles) has suffered some form of spring breakage. It is now loose between the auto mode (left hand side) across the gate to the tiptronic mode (right hand side). It flops from one to the other during cornering.
Is this an easy DIY fix, local garage, or should I go the main dealer route? All clues are welcome.
Thanks

| AC low pressure "valve" Jone T. 21:34:34 |
| | I wan't to connect a manometer to the AC system on my '96 A4 1.8T but I can only find the "valve" on the high pressure side. The high pressure valve is on the condenser. This makes me think the low pressure valve could be on the vaporizer but it would be kind of wired to put it so far from the other one and behind lots of interior. Anyone know where it is and if it exists?

| 2002 A4 1.8T "SLUDGE" - warranty extension - help needed. Cdn_thnk_tnk 21:08:01 |
| | Hello,
New to the group and have read some posts on the sludge issues. I know this message is long but I want to provide all the relevant information.
I just purchased a used 2002 A4 1.8T Quattro with about 98,000 kilometers on it. I have had the car for about 2 weeks. I purchased the car from a used car dealer who provided the certification and pre-delivery maintenance (a synthetic oil change). I have put about 300 kilometers on the car.
While driving on the highway, the car seemed to lose a considerable amount of power and then just before reaching my destination, the engine light came on. The information console indicated that I should check the oil pressure. I phoned a local Audi service center. The service manager prompted me to add a litre of synthetic oil and get to a service center ASAP. I added Mobil 5W30 synthetic and started to make my way to the nearest dealer. About 2 kilometers away from the service center, the light came on, the engine dropped power and a lot of noise was coming from the engine.
I made it to the dealer. They informed me that the engine was "sludged" and that the engine would need to be replaced. I also know that Audi extended the warranty period due to this issue up to eight years provided documentation of regular maintenance. As the car was purchased used, I do not have original receipts for maintenance. Fortunately, the service manager at my local dealership was able to pull the service records for the car from the previous Audi dealership and certify these in the maintenance book for the car. The car was maintained regularly by the previous owner at the Audi dealer though some of the service intervals slipped those required by the manufacturer (by between 500-2000KMs).
The service manager informed me yesterday that Audi will not get involved. Audi is claiming this service intercal "slippage" is the reason they will not honour the warranty.
I have called Audi customer service as well as the used car dealer from where I purchased the car. I am awaiting feedback from both.
To me, while I am not a mechanic, it seems unrealistic that slippage of no more than 2000KMs in servicing could cause this problem. I have no basis for this opinion but would be interested in hearing the opionions of others who are knowledgable on these things.
I am looking to understand if others have faced a similar issue and what the outcome was for you. Is there hope or am I screwed?
Thanks in advance

| Audi A3 1999 1.8 20v (AGN engine code): ECU problems Nuffsnuff@Aol.Com 20:33:15 |
| | Car was running fine up to when it went into local Audi dealer for a routine service + recoding some spare transponder keys. Dealer reported that faults with engine management system were showing which would require more diagnostic time to trace. But car was virtually undrivable upon return from dealer and rapidly became almost totally undrivable - erratic running, almost no engine power intermittently etc.
So car recovered to dealers who after much diagnostics have advised that it needs a replacement ECU - needless to say at a very steep estimated price, but I now really have no choice but to get it fitted so that the car will run properly again.
Suppose the fault and the servicing could just have coincided and suppose nothing is provable either way, but I'm just posting this in case this is a known / common fault on this model or if anyone can offer any further observations / explanations.

| Needles jumping and lights flickering on A3 dash Cp1234 19:41:42 |
| | Hi
I have a 2001 (X) Audi A3 1.8 SE and I'm having a problem with the dashboard lighting and speed, rpm, fuel and temp dials.
Initially from a cold start (despite the warm weather) the needles were jumping back and forth and the rpm and spedo backlights flicker. The clock and mileometer displays also flicker. After the car has warmed up (5 mins approx) the needles and displays return to normal. This has been happening for 3 days.
Today for the first 10 mins of my journey the needles remained on 0 and the lights off. Eventually they flickered for a while and came back to life. First the display lights return, then the fuel/temp needles returned to normal, then finally the rpm and speedo dials.
I also noticed that while the dash lights are flickering the radio continues to work but it's lit display gets dimmer and brighter.
Does anyone know what could be causing this? A component on it's way out or a lose wire somewhere?
Thanks, CP

| Brake fluid flush procedure (Audi 100, 1989) Christoph Bollig 03:23:13 |
| | Hi everyone,
I've got my Audi 100, 1989 model since ~4 years now and never bothered about the brake fluid. There is a very good chance that the previous owner never bothered either. I did consider to have the system flushed, but at two independent garages they are hesitant to touch it. One of them recommended to not bother, the other one recommended to go to the Audi agent.
Both of them mentioned that the brake master cylinder could collapse or something like this. IIRC, one of them said this could happen with "all the brake pumping with no resistance". I almost decided to have Audi dealer do it once my finances allow some long-term maintenance expenses. However, I now had a clutch problem and a friend helped me to bleed the clutch with his little pressure bleeder (the one you connect to an inflated tyre and it pushes the fluid through). I am wondering whether the complete brake fluid flushing can be that difficult and risky.
I did a google search but could not find anywhere on this group that anyone mentions a brake fluid flush as a risky procedure (nor on www.audifans.com ). The closest I came was the following statement (I'm not sure whether that's what they are worried about):
"DOT4 or above will do the job personaly i prefer the 2 man job pumping the pedal but on the first few pumps take it real easy as depending on the mileage i have had vehicles flick the master cylinder seals inside out usually on nissans never had it happen on an audi but u never know" (whole thread at: http://groups.google.com/group/alt.autos.audi/browse_thread/thread/dc663c4a4a539bde/292e33214487eb8c?#292e33214487eb8c )
Can I assume that there is no such risk, if I use the pressure bleeder?
Is there any link to someone going through the procedure step by step?
As far as I understand, the propper procedure seems to be: 1) Clutch 2) Brakes one by one starting with the longest line Is there anything else I need to do?
I heard that it might make sense to push out the old fluid with air first before putting in the new one. Would that make sense? Should I get the old fluid out of the clutch and all lines and then do the new one everywhere, or is this stupid?
If the pressure method, do I need to do something to get the old fluid out of the master cylinder (maybe pump once or twice in the process)?
Thanks a lot for your help,
Christoph

| Help---Trying to sell car---should I put more $$ into fixing A/C??? Thomas G. Marshall 17:02:56 |
| | 2000 A4 1.8T / 77,500 miles / Manual / Quattro / Laser Red / Black interior. In Eastern Mass (if that helps with the valuation at all).
*Guys I'm stuck here*.
I've got a car that had some things wrong with it at the last minute, I've fixed them all except that the A/C is resisting a lot of attempts. It's likely the evaporator core at this point which is ~$1400 to replace.
Otherwise this is a beautiful car---clean. The original asking price without a/c trouble was $11,399, which ironically landed right on the AutoTrader.com's average private selling price for the thing.
I've replaced the radiator Put in new floor mats Tried a million things to get the a/c working both at dealership and independent. Fixed radio (another @#$%ing last minute thing)
Total $$ put in so far ~$1200
I've got two choices that I see here:
1. Put the car at a $1000 to $2000 discount and just sit using autotrader's list-until-sold package until September when I'm told by a car salesman that people stop worrying about A/C.
2. Dump $1400 in, just to sell the thing mid summer.
Do you have any suggestions for me?????
Thanks!

| Symphony II no AF function? Jim 11:45:13 |
| | I have an '03 A4 with Symphony II radio. The AF function (where the radio automatically re-tunes to the strongest signal for stations which transmit on several fequencies regionally) does not work.
As I drive around the country, I must manually re-tune the radio as the signal fades. My previous A4 with concert radio had a working AF function.
Is there any menu on the radio to enable AF (I have the RDS function enabled), or is mine broken?
Thanks,
Jim.

| A4 - Headlight washers won't *retract* Taz 19:53:38 |
| | Howdy folks-
It's odd. I'll head over to AWorld in a bit, though it is frustrating I can't figure out why this is happening.
Bottom Line: my headlight washers won't retract, and they're resisting the old manual push-back. I drained the washer resevoir, and other than it being hotter than hell outside for the past week, nothing seems out of the ordinary.
Yeah, I turned the lights on/off while depressing the lever in an attempt to get the washers to catch and retract. No dice.
Still under warranty; I was just hoping not to deal w/ that nonsense.
Everything about this car is great, except everything that's not the car.
Regards-
G

| | the cupholder that slides out of the dashboard just above the radio has to be a joke, right? i mean unless mine isn't unfolding correctly, there is no way you can put a drink into it. am i missing something? it just sort of slides out and creates a very shallow tray with no upward support for the drink.
