Looking for a an Audi A4 around 5K

Guest 18 April 2005 07:00:59
Hello Guys I have a 2001 A4 but now my friend wants to get an Audi too.
He can afford only around 5K, which seems to be not a lot of money but
he does not mind a Fwd insead of a Quattro, no leather inerior, No CD
is fine too. Most important we thought was the mileage and condition.
If he could get one under 100K miles would be good enough. Any
suggestions apart from local news paper, cars.com and autotrader.com??
Please let me know.

Thanks.

There's loads of A4s and A6s available for that kind of money - or do
what I do and buy a Passat, which effectively gets you an A6 for half
the price.

No flames here, Steve - that's about right. A6 chassis, A4 guts and
bits, VW emblem on the grille. FWD, relatively inexpensive (I guess if
you convert USD to UKP, the price is about right.)

Doesn't have four rings, but it does provide just about the same
experience as a FWD A6. (I say this having driven a Passat and an AWD
A6.)

E.P.

P.S. You got that right about Alfas - owned a '72 GTV when I was young
and full of time and money to fix cars. That car was a blast, and
didn't really take that much cash or time in repairs. I wish I hadn't
sold that car for the princely sum of $250. :(

Just visiting from Saab world, and curious if the A4 shares with the
smaller VW (GOlf?) in the same way?

I'd have preferred an Audi - but the A4 I find is too cramped, and the
A6 too expensive. (That's if you want a B5 platform A6 - the older Audi
100 / A6 is very cheap, but incredibly badly dated now). My 1.8T came in
at probably around 4k USD at current exchange rates.

I love my Alfas, but the current range doesn't inspire me - the 156
looks lovely, but is just a fancy Fiat..... I much prefer my 75 /
Milano, but 100 miles / day was killing it, so I gave it to my wife who
does a lot less mileage. It's going in for a bodywork resto. in a few
weeks.

No. The Golf shares with the Audi A3 - transverse engine, rather than
the longitudinal arrangement on the A4/A6/Passat.

Exactly why the Passat fits the bill...

Nice! BTW, I drive an older A6 estate when hauling the family and
stuff. Dated? How dare you! :)

I never liked anything past the GTV6, other than the '91-94 Spider. I
liked the 166, but the 164 was FWD, and I liked Alfa for RWD and
100-year-old suspension tech (de Dion.) The Milano, while nice from a
mechanical standpoint (GTV6 guts) turned me off style-wise. Now, if I
could get a 2600 Touring Spider, or a round-tail Sprint Zagato, I'd be
in heaven. And if I had that kind of money, I'd buy an RS6. :)

The older ones just have a charm that's absent in the newer cars. A
nice '86 GTV6, with a 3.0L conversion would be swell. Got one, in LHD?
