Well I'm in the UK which may be different but my plastic key will start car. The manual doesn't actually say very much about it other than using temporarily if the flip keys have been lost. Since it's plastic it'll wear> out quickly so you'd need to get a metal key fairly quickly.> Maybe it was our Bora manual that mentioned something about turning on the> ignition within 30 seconds of unlocking the car so the alarm wouldn't sound.>
Just to be clear, the three VAG cars that I've owned have all come with metal keys and one plastic spare key. I haven't tried the plastic key in Lupo but I'll see what it does later. The "all plastic" key /does/ start the car which, by definition, means that it contains an immobiliser chip. Mine tended to get used in winter - start the car to de-ice the glass & warm the seats, lock it with the standard key, and have another cup of coffee ;o)
Cheers,

My 2002 1.8T Quattro A4 is making a whining noise when I turn the wheel. The more I turn it, the louder it seems. Any Ideas what it might be?

2002 A4 A/C not working. Economy button will not go off. 2002A4 20:08:35 |
| | Has anyone had a problem with their Climate Control Economy button not going off and the A/C compressor not working? I'm not sure if it's just the button or if the compressor has a problem. No warning lights have come on and I'm dreading bringing it in for service.
Need some advice. Thanks |

| A4 Engine cut out Guest 15:26:02 |
| | Hi, Just had a very weird thing happen with my A4 1.8T - just coming off a roundabout into a garage and braking for the car in front of me and all of a sudden the engine isn't running, no warning or any lurch etc just the steering wheel losing power and the lights on the dash lit up.
I have found this: http://groups.google.co.uk/group/alt.autos.audi/browse_thread/thread/90adf7d5737a98b8/eac4b07e01023071?lnk=st&q=audi+a4+engine+stops&rnum=29&hl=en#eac4b07e01023071 which sounds like a similar thing but there isn't any follow up post - does anyone know how this got resolved or what the problem might be? I'm meant to be using the car next weekend for a 400+ mile journey now I'm not sure I want to, should I be running to my nearest VW/Audi dealer?
Cheers
Bob

| 87 Audi 5000 overheating Martino 15:44:53 |
| | After detecting white colored sludge in the overflow reservoir, I cleaned and flushed the radiator coolant.
Now, in stop-go traffic, the car still overheats occasionally.
I am speculating that the radiator core is still congested with the white sludge, which mostly likely formed due to using the wrong antifreeze coolant!!!
The car also failed the California Gross Polluter smog test. (The NO (PPM) figures where slightly out of range to the upside.)
I have read this could be caused by a too high burn temperature in the combustion chamber. The sparkplugs tend to confirm this by displaying a white color, and likely caused by the overheating.
I think I will remove the radiator and do a reverse flush with a garden hose. Most likely this will not work and there may be no other way to flush the radiator with chemicals.
This experience confirms that the audi must have the right antifreeze solution to minimize this kind of mess.
Anybody out there with a similar experience?

That was not the point ...
To replace the water pump _or_ the timing belt, 90% of the job is done - replacing the other one as well. The thumb rule - is to change both at the same time, to save work hours

| Balance weights affecting traction control? Sly 01:18:00 |
| | Just had two new tyres on my A3 and they balanced them with steel weights, not lead as they are toxic and not allowed to be used any more incase anyone eats their wheels!
Since then my ASR light flashes when I pull away and has to be turned off and on in order for me to carry on driving.
Could the weights be affecting the ASR or worse still could it affect my ABS when I need it most?!
My garage is looking into it, but this could help if they find nothing and others too in the future.
Thanks

Tomorrow I will buy the new temp sensor and see if it gives different readings that might stop the warm start problem.
Going from the practical to the theoretical - assuming that my temperature sensor is indeed faulty, how would a new one, reading ca. 5C higher, solve my starting problem?
Thanks, Robert

| A8 stalls, check engine light constantly on Trouble 01:18:00 |
| | Hi,
yesterday I was driving down the road after going for appr. 25 miles and the engine stalled all of a sudden. There was no noise or any other sign of problems. The car just shut off, radio and heater still on. After starting the engine again, I was able to continue.
Today, after exiting the highway, the car stalled again. After starting the engine, the "Check Engine: light stayed on. Again, no signs of any other trouble.
The Audi dealers in the area have no slots available right now, the wait is at least several days. I'm not sure if I can safely drive this car anymore.
Any ideas what it could be?
THANKS!

| Poor hot starting Auldyin 23:27:06 |
| | I have a 1990 Audi 90 2.2, which starts first time from cold. Once it has been running for about 10 mins it will not start again requiring about 35 seconds cranking before it fires up. It also runs "lumpy" at low revs when driven. Tick over is normal as is accelaration. Any suggestions please (injector cooling fan is okay).

Jack the car and spin the wheels - if the wheels are tough to move - it might be your problem.
Also possible problem is the wheel alignment. If severed toed-in/out, you would see it on the MPG reading.
Check the lambda reader as well ( will show up if you read the error codes)

| Castrol SLX Longlife II Chris Bartram 14:21:11 |
| | does anyone know the going rate for 4 litres of SLX Longlife II and even better, does anyone know an online supplier? My local parts shop stocks it, but it's 48 quid. I know it's an expensive oil, but that seems a bit steep.
I know Halfords also stock it- that's where I'll probably go if there's no better option.

| A4 bluetooth (UHV) pairing with Qtek S100 - or other PDA / smartphone Ray 19:39:26 |
| | I have a 2004 A4 1.8T outfitted by the factory with a UHV bluetooth carkit and a cradle for my Nokia. I have a Nokia 6310 that pairs fine with the bluetooth function and can also be used by using the carkit cradle. The contacts on my SIMcard automatical upload and I am able to call from the phone and using the controls on my steering wheel.
The carkit cradle consists of 2 parts: a standard bracket that is mounted on the side of the middle console and the actual cradle. The cradle is available for various phones and can be easily replaced.
At this moment I am considering buying a Qtek S100. I have done some research but have not yet come up with questions to the following questions: - are there cradles or adapters available that will fit a Qtek or other PDA onto the standard Audi carkit? - I have heard that only voice dialling works with the UHV bluetooth kit. Uploading your contact details from the SIMcard apparently is also not possible. Does anybody know how I could fix this?
Before I spend 550 Euros on the darn thing I want to understand how to integrate it into my A4.
all help is appreciated.

| Central locking systemon Audi A4 (y reg) Jabba 12:24:07 |
| | Hi, my Dad has problems on the central locking system on his A4. it seems to have a mind of its own and will lock-unlock at will as well as intermittently work with the key fob.
Before taking it to a grg he would like to confirm that it is a problem with the unit that controls the central/remote locking.
Where on the car is this located? How do you get at it?
Hope you can help.
Thanks Jamie

| Adding additional "Cigar" sockets. Pugsy 14:45:55 |
| | Just brought a lovely 2000/W A4, can officially say that I have converted from Land Rover! One thing the Disco had was a very accessible cigar lighter, really easy for my PDA cradle and charger. However, the A4 has a cigar lighter in the middle of the centre console! Not very handy for my Vario! I am thinking of getting a double cigar adaptor with a long flex and adding this to the original cigar lighter's wiring and installing the double neatly in my glove compartment.
Has anyone done this, if so how easy is it and where do I start? Anything I need to look out for?
Any comments welcome, helpful ones are best though!! ;)
Thanks to whoever reads this,
Regrds,
M

| P1128 Kws 07:01:08 |
| | FYI - 2000 A4 1.8T; 75K miles - CEL light was on and the engine had a behavior of attempting to maintain the same speed (for about a second or so)when shifting (manual shift). Code reader said P1128. Fooled around with this and that and finally bought a rebuilt MAF from Autozone for about $70. Problem fixed.
