| 156 Service checklist? Gherries 12:25:39 |
| | Does anyone have a copy of the 156 service checklist, they can email or point to for me to download?
My manual is in dutch so for me is unfortunately unreadable.
I'm after understanding what needs checking, replacing etc for 100,000KM and 120,000KM, I think thats 60,000 and 72,000 miles.
Thanks G

| Leather Seat Covers for a Spider Mark Hickey 21:52:11 |
| | Hi, all....
I recently had an episode where the logical part of my brain was apparently starved for oxygen, and bought an '85 Spider Veloce. The good news is, the previous owner had recently overhauled the engine, replaced the top, installed Eibach springs, Koni shocks, Exip wheels, Michelin tires and a host of other items.
The bad news is that the leather seats are in pretty poor shape - particularly the drivers side, which has several large rips in the material.
The online research I've done only turned up a few suppliers of reupholstery kits for the Spider... International Auto Parts, and leatherseats.com. The cost (in US$) would be between $500 and 750 for the kit...
Does anyone have any words of wisdom about either of these options - or perhaps there's a better option out there somewhere (like a cottage shop lovingly turning out top grade hide covers in Milan for $200 a set).
The other part I'd like to find is an aftermarket "bolt-on" front air dam (the on on my car is now repaired, but has seen more than its share of abuse).
Mark Hickey (in the US)

| Boot not closing on 147 Tom 20:10:27 |
| | Hi,
The boot on my Alfa 147 has suddenly stopped locking when I close it. It's been used several times today with no trouble but then on my last attempt to close it, it wouldn't lock closed. I've tried several times and also sprayed the lock with WD40, which didn't make any difference.
Has anyone else had this problem and can suggest a solution, or is it a matter of waiting until Monday and taking it to an Alfa garage?
Thanks, Tom

| 159 Opening Thoughts Zathras 18:33:06 |
| | There were a couple of 159s in our local showroom today so I had a look. A 1.9JTS and a 2.4JTDm. I thought they looked much better in the metal than in the pictures I've seen.
It's not as photogenic as the 156 was. The front of the car is much more 'in your face' than the 156 front. However, cleaning all the detail bits round the lights and grills looks like a power wash or toothbrush job (thanks a lot for that Geo!).
The standard 17 inch wheels (toothbrushes required again) didn't seem to fit as snuggly in the wheel arches as I was expecting and the cars both looked high off the ground especially at the back.
The door handles do feel nice but they are a bit ordinary really. Where the 156 said 'I want to be different' this car is much more about being similar. I suppose the exception is the front end but, to be honest, the relative dullness of the rest of the car makes you gasp when you walk round and get to the extrovert front. It just seems a little unbalanced to me.
Inside, there was some odd positioning of switchgear - the fog light switches have moved to where the fuse box cover is on the 156 but they looked a bit out of the way on the underside slope of the dash. Other than that, the inside will not seem unfamiliar to 156 owners. This also includes a dire lack of space in the back if the front passengers are tall. The front seats on one of the show cars were sufficiently far back that I could not envisage someone actually getting their feet and legs in the back foot wells.
As usual, there's a shortage of leather on the doors so anyone not going for black leather will have little patches of coloured leather on their doors.
Looking at the options list (something that's grown out of all proportion since the 156), the external colours are disappointingly dreary with little choice (Alfa Red and a light silver seemed the only viable bright colours). Several options (like a sunroof) are not available at launch.
So what's my gut feeling - I'm really under whelmed actually! I came away thinking it was far too much like a face lifted 156 and not a new car.
There's also some info now filtering out on the net hinting that Alfa may be at it again with the hyperbole (no it wasn't the centre of attention at a certain car show) and, yes, it appears that the suspension settings on the 2.2JTS are too under damped for UK roads. However, Alfa do learn SOME things and all the petrol engines now come with the reassurance of chain driven cams! Yippee.
From the specs, the 2.4JTDm appears to be carrying a VERY similar mechanical specification (brakes etc) to the 3.2JTS. The word on the street is that the 2.4JTDm is the one to buy - the 3.2 is held back by its weight (it now has 4WD ), the 2.2JTS by suspect suspension. The 1.9JTDm is also a contender.
The equivalent car to mine is now 10,000UKP more than mine was so..er..I think I'll wait and let someone else get punched in the face with the early years Alfa depreciation.
What a disappointment really...

| AR 159, seen it today: too BMW-ish for me Robert Pichler 14:28:58 |
| | So, an outstanding car really, it looks fast even when it's standing. The front is so agressive that it look it will bite you if come close to her. The rear lights are too similar to the Seat Cordoba, I liked more the 156 design of the rear. Miniature back door and miniature space behind front seats. I like the feeling of a small car when you sit behind the wheel. I currently drive the 147 and when you're in the car you don't feel the difference in size. I like that. There are too many buttons and they are so, I don't know how to express it... German. On touch they are of the same materials used in BMW and Audi. I miss that Italian style of the interior. I wasn't in the possibility to drive it today, the test drive versions are supposed to arrive on March 15th here in Croatia so then I'll write down my other thoughts.
Opinion till now: I like the general design of the car but I don't like that german car feeling in the interior. I would really like that Italian Spirit again.
I've cancelled my order of the 159 and I'll be buying a 2003 or 2004 redesigned 156 with 2.4 JTD. Alfa Rosso, of course. An Italian one.
Robert

| 147 dashboard restart/reset Nick 23:13:26 |
| | Hi
I've had a 147 Selespeed for three years now and for the past two summers, I've had a recurring problem. Typically on really hot days, the dashboard cuts out. All the dash lights go out, the multifunction display clears and all the needles freeze. 5 to 60 seconds later, the lights come back on, the self test starts and the needles judder to zero, before bouncing back to where they should be. The odometer, whose value I can just make out, freezes during the blackout, but updates itself correctly after the dash restarts. This doesn't normally happen when it cold outside, but it just happend last weekend on a cold day, while I had the heating up full. This has never happend while stationary, so I've not been able to switch off and one the ignition.
While its out every other car function operates as expected.
Dealer has no idea, and the failure is not common enough/long enough to demonstrate to them, but I thought I'd heard something similar before. Any ideas what could be wrong? Bad connection or thermal cut-out maybe?
Thanks

| Re: Rear Power window goes down, not UP!! (164 24V) FrankyG 13:50:07 |
| | I took the door apart and switched the wires round on the window control switch, which worked, but now the window can only go up! Which is fine...at least it won't get stuck anywhere else apart from fully closed. At least the moter is working in both directions. I also tested the door control swith in the other door, and it worked fine. Don't know what to try next...
Cheers.

Have read up on them, engines seem fairly solid, not sure about everything else on Alfas though, depends on your luck with these?
