| Re: GT + 17" wheels + snow chains Tyno 21:22:24 |
| | I thought that you can only use snow chains on the 17" wheels if you have a V6. Then you must choose for the smaller size wheel (205). I usually have the 18" wheels for the summer.
I use Michelin Pilot Alpin's for the winter. They're great, no complaints....

| My 159 has arrived Stephen Poley 09:50:57 |
| | It's arrived! My new 159 - a 1.9 JTS.
So what do I think of it after the first few days driving? Well, the overall impression is extremely positive. Although it is a very different car to the 146 I had until now, I very quickly felt at home in it. The suspension is superb, giving nice flat cornering but also doing a very good job of absorbing bumps in the road. Obviously I can't say anything on the performance as I haven't tried pushing it yet - I believe in running my cars in. This is however quite a difficult car to run in gently: particularly in the lower gears, just blink and you're at 4500 rpm.
The 159 is pretty well insulated, which makes for comfortable motorway driving, and means one can listen to the radio better. I like it, though possibly people who particularly appreciated the roar of a boxer at high revs might find it a little disappointing. There is still a fair bit of tyre noise at motorway speeds.
The build feels generally very solid - no rattles or loose panels - but is slightly spoiled by one piece of trim on the front passenger door which doesn't align with the corresponding trim on the dash. The materials seem good apart from the plastic of the control stalks, which feels a bit cheap.
It is a very complex car compared to any I have driven before, though perhaps not exceptional in its class. The handbook is 268 pages, and there's a separate 66-page book on the radio!! One would probably need to drive the car a few weeks before one can really form an opinion on how good the ergonomics of all the controls are, but for the present I'm happy to give it the benefit of the doubt. A few things I was initially not keen on now seem OK after three days. There are some buttons which are a little awkward to get at, but I couldn't immediately visualise a better way of arranging them. (Except for the hazard flashers button, where I still prefer the Ford placement on top of the steering column.)
(Incidentally someone here complained that the boot release switch was poorly placed as one could easily open it by mistake while trying to switch on the interior lights, and would then have to get out to shut it again. I understand from the handbook however that one can disable this switch, and just use the button on the ignition "key". This was probably done in response to other people making this same observation.)
Some minor details they didn't quite get right: - the rear parcel shelf is a bit too glossy, and hats and scarfs tend to slide around; - there is a cubbyhole thoughtfully provided for CDs (i.e. CD jewel-boxes). But you can't put the CDs in oriented so that you can read the spine labels!
A bigger gripe is the speedometer, which isn't as clear as some and overreads by a whopping 7%-8% according to my GPS. Any car with pretensions to quality ought to have a speedo accurate to a couple of percent at most.
I ordered just one accessory, namely a parking sensor (rear bumper only). That was a good decision and I would strongly recommend getting it. It makes parking a lot easier and protects you against obstacles which are too low to see through the rear window.
As I said, the overall impression is extremely positive. However the car does have one really weird fault. On the way home I started to wonder why I wasn't getting any warm air. Being used to computers I instinctively turned the heating control the other way - and indeed it was reversed. Not too serious, and humorously reminiscent of taps in southern European hotels. Worse however, the knob controlling the direction of the airflow was also reversed. Worse still: instead of getting warm air to the feet and cool air to the face, that was reversed too! Worst of all: the windows misted up badly with normal ventilation settings.
It gets more bizarre - I had literally just made an appointment with the garage to get this looked at, when the complete system re-inverted itself and started working normally in all respects! It is rather obviously a firmware problem; hopefully there will be a firmware fix available at some stage. Another call to the garage revealed that there isn't at present.
Anyway, if this one problem can be fixed, or if it decides to stay away of its own accord, then I have high hopes that this car is going to be very enjoyable indeed.

| low profile tyres + snow = kerb :( Grahame 03:05:06 |
| | Depressing calculation:
(10mph + snow on ground + turn right) = (understeer + kerb + bump)
Alfa GT 18" aloys, now with nasty scrape and steering wheel shake increasing with speed.
I know I can have the cosmetic damage on the alloy fixed for around Ј40, but what other damage do you think could have been caused at that sort of speed to cause the wheel shake. Could the wheel be buckled? Suspension damage? And at what cost?
Anyone got experience of this sort of mishap could give me an idea what kind of financial pain to expect from my local Alfa dealer when I put it in for repair?
Thanks - Grahame.

| Alfetta GTV electric windows Michael Anthony 23:33:35 |
| | Hi all
I've just bought a new (OK, old but better nick - you know what I mean) pair of doors for my '82 GTV. Only problem is my car has manual windows and the replacement doors are electric. Now, call me an old cynic but I'm far happier with manual winders rather than 20+ year old Alfa electrics. Anyone know how easy it would be to convert the donor doors over to manual?
Cheers

| 156 Selespeed Lever Inversion Ross 14:23:54 |
| | Hey all,
I've recently ended up with a 2001 156 Selespeed Sportwagon and I'm fairly happy with it so far apart from one thing - to me, the +/- on the gear lever is the wrong way round.
What I would like to achieve is swapping the current Up = Change Up / Down = Change Down over to Up = Change Down / Down = Change Up. Yes, I could just live with the buttons, but sometimes chasing them round the wheel gets to be a pain.
Having done a similar mod to a Steptronic equipped BMW 540 I had, I armed myself with the connector pinout and swapped the gear selection wires over... This seemed to work until I discovered I couldn't get reverse any more. D'OH!
It seems to me that the only way to get what I want is to remove the gear lever, turn it 180 degrees and bolt it back in. As it looks like it could be quite a job to do this (removing quite a lot of the centre console), I was wondering if anyone else had done this and had any hints to give? Or maybe somebody has found another way of doing the inversion and would care to share?
TIA for any help.
Ross.

| 156 2.4JTD: Fuel Consumption SimonC 09:50:07 |
| | Hi all
Did a run from Gloucestershire to Cornwall over the weekend, which was great apart from the fuel consumption...26.8mpg!
Where's the other 14+ mpg gone?
A few weeks ago the dealer replaced the air flow meter, which they said would fix the problem...it obviously hasn't. Is there anything else they should be looking at?
The car has done 41k miles and is approaching 3.5 years old.
Looking forward to your reponses.
Cheers Simon C

Thought you might like the pics of the Spider and Sportwagon.
I hadn't realised that the Spider/Brera shared the dash with the 159...not sure if that's a good thing!
I had a look round the 159 at my local dealers the other day and it's...ok, but not great to look at...doesn't seem to grab your attention as much as the 156 did.

| Hardwiring in a Radar Detector Graeme Cosgrove 01:31:48 |
| | Just got myself a radar detector, as the points were beginning to mount up and driving to the speed limit is not always an option in an Alfa.
Anyway, I quite like the idea of hardwiring it into the electrical system, and there is a cable supplied with the unit to do just that. (It's a Snooper S2 by the way).
Are there any electrical experts who could offer advice on the best way of doing this? My plan was to stick a "chocolate box" behind the cigarette lighter fuse and run the patch cable from there. The patch cable has it's own fuse in it.

| Desira - serves me right ?! Nc 10:51:16 |
| | I've got a small oil leak (the odd spot on the drive - nothing major). Thought I'd drop it into the local Desira for them to take a look and let me know whats wrong. Spent 1.5hours waiting round today, and after that time they managed to come up with the gem of "its very dirty under there, so we've cleaned it. Come back in a week so we can have a proper look to see where its coming from. We think it might be the cam cover gasket". Total cost - ВЈ82 !! For what ??!?! I could have got it steam cleaned for a tenner somewhere else. I questioned the charge, was told it was standard for that job (they dont have hourly rates anymore), and I had to pay as I agreed to any charges when I signed the form saying they could look at it.
Serves me right I guess... i expected them to charge ВЈВЈ to fix it, but ВЈ80 later they've hardly even started !
Incidently, they quoted another ВЈ80 to have it fixed if indeed it does turn out to the be the cam cover gasket. Does that sound reasonable ?
