| ABS warning lamp R D S 18:51:16 |
| | ABS warning lamp came on today.
I pressed hard on the brakes (checked mirrors first obviously, made sure fog lights were off etc) and indeed the wheels did lock.
I pulled in, engine off, restarted, ABS light stayed on for a while as I set off then went out, all is now well.
Shall I start saving up?

| Opinions of garage? Tom Harvey 21:35:51 |
| | Hi there,
Just a quick question...
Has anyone here had any experience of or opinions on NJS Motor Vehicle Services in Pershore, Worcestershire, (as seen at http://www.njs.biz/ and who advertise themselves as specialising in the Service, Repair and Sales of Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Lancia and other Italian automobiles)?
I am looking for an independent Alfa garage (had enough of the costs at main dealers), and they seem to be the nearest one I can find to Bromsgrove (unless you can tell me otherwise). Any comments on quality of service, services available, cost and personal experiences etc would be very welcome.
Many thanks, Tom -- Tom Harvey___________________________________________________________ http://www.harveyzone.com/ Home: tom(a)harveyzone.com

| performance tweaks R D S 14:44:13 |
| | Are there any cheap and cheerful upgrades to eek a bit more performance out of a 2.0 TS 156? Do sport air filters make much of a difference?
I notice having it chipped only adds 15bhp. I'm not a speed freak but its a while since i've had any sort of performance and i'm getting a taste for it?

| Brera review Tony Rickard 21:40:58 |
| | Motors TV review on the V6 Brera here:
http://tinyurl.com/g3rdv
The worrying bit for the Alfisti:
"However, under the bonnet that classic Italian sensation is gone and that is the biggest criticism that can be made about the Brera. The 260 brake horsepower 3.2-litre V6 is GM built, or rather Holden and not Alfa Romeo. There isn’t any of the superb chrome but rather some very unattractive plastic and once you turn the key…that Alfa soul is desperately missing…so is that sweet engine sound."
This does rather go against most other reviews that claim the V6 retains the Alfa spirit.
Anyone here driven the new 159 or Brera V6?
Cheers Tony

| I've just had a (thankfully) rare visit to a main dealer SteveH 16:00:37 |
| | ..... to order a pair of aircon pipes for the 156.
Now, call me old fashioned, but shouldn't the bloke on the parts desk be able to identify which bits you need, rather than the customer having to work it out for themselves?
Needless to say, they're only having my money for the parts, I'm not letting them anywhere near the car.

| OK, the idea of a V6 is appealing at the moment..... SteveH 02:30:16 |
| | Right, it comes down to this:
I get 28mpg from my Marea on my commute.
The company pays a pittance - 20p / mile. However, roughly speaking, given that the first 10 miles each way come out of my pocket, I claim back roughly 70 quid per week..... of which I like to put some away for maintenance.
Now, my commute is mainly dual carriageway interupted by roundabouts with a mile of town driving at the other end and 3 miles of slower traffic at my end.
In all honesty, so long as I'm not silly, I can't see a V6 being *that* much worse than the Marea - maybe a few mpg overall?
What say the group?

| Parts Car -- Should I Buy It? Guest 01:58:15 |
| | Esteemed Alfisti --
I have a 1986 Spider Veloce with 171,000 miles, which I acquired last year.
Its previous owners treated it very well but of course it continues to age. Lately, the 1st and 2nd gear syncros have become "particular" and require a variety of techniques (double-clutching into 2nd from 1st; and pushing the gearstick into 3rd or 2nd before going into 1st when the vehicle is stopped) to avoid the "gnashing of teeth" (as mentioned in parts of the Bible). (And yes, in case you're wondering, this is not the original 2nd gear syncro -- it was changed some years ago.)
Now, I have the opportunity to buy a 1987 Graduate parts car which has only 81,000 miles. The owner had just bought it a week before it got totaled from the rear end (by the tow truck that was coming to get it -- which reminds me, I need to ask for a reminder of why the car was getting towed in the first place).
According to the owner, the Graduate's transmission was very smooth and hardly ever made any sounds going into 2nd. Her mechanic had told her it was in exceptionally good condition for an 81,000 transmission that had never (to her knowledge) had a syncro replacement.
Thus the question for me: if I can get the parts car for ~$1,000 (US) and if I have access to reasonably priced labor to disassemble the thing, should I buy it? Will the 81,000 transmission be useful to me? Or am I just going to spend all that labor for removal and re-installation to find that in a year or so, it's no better than my current transmission?
Granted, I'm also going to get a lot of other spare parts: the engine, the doors, front fenders, and hood in particular might have some value to me in the future. (I have space for storage.)
Advice?
Many thanks!
Phil in North Carolina, USA

| New engine in 97 GTV Dirty Davey 00:00:05 |
| | Hi all,
I bought a fantastic used 2.0 GTV about 6 weeks ago with 65k on the clock. Then, the huge smile that I'd been carrying aorund for the past few weeks was promptly wiped from my face when a conn rod failed and ended up destroying the engine block
I've found a recon engine, ВЈ1200 fully fitted.
My question is, is it worth it? Is this just another unreliable Alfa story that I keep hearing and am I going to have something else happen in a few thousand miles?
And, if I do have a new engine put in will it add any notable value to the car?
I only paid ВЈ3k for the car in the first place, but I do truly love driving it however the continuous ramblings of my wife and friends telling me to buy something sensible like a Ford are beginning to take there toll.
So, can anyone give me some reassurance that replacing the engine is a sensible option
Cheers,
T
