| 147 Air-con drain Dominic 00:06:57 |
| | My 147 needs the mod to the air con drain, to save the passenger footwell carpet! Was in for its 3600 mile service yesterday, it's less than 3 years old (3 years next jan) so I was assuming they'd fix it. Ooh noo, 3rd year warranty doesn't cover air-con pipes. They wanted an hour of labour to do the job, Ј75. Did offer to do it for Ј50. I said I'd think about it!
Anyone give me a pointer to any DIY instructions for this fix? I'd rather spend a few hours on it myself than pay the garage even more money.
(The service cost Ј356. And now the sump oil plug is leaking. Guess which garage I might think twice about using after January?)
Ta
Dom.

| Alfa 156 - Suspension bush replacement Malcolm Osborne 04:04:00 |
| | There has been a fair amount of discussion on this subject, but my question is - to replace all relevant bushes on the front suspension, how many bushes are involved?
I want to get a quote from a non-franchised garage to do the job, to compare with a dealer charge, but he hasn't done this work before on the newer Alfa's. (Has worked on Suds, GTV's, Alfettas, etc.)
I can see that bushes would have to be replaced on the lower end of the swing arm (wishbone?) but what others? I too have squeaky bushes (esp. when cold).

| Alarm wont disable Graham Neal 01:08:21 |
| | My GTV alarm is on but won't switch off when I press the button on the fob. The fob has a new battery and the car emits a small beep when I press the button but nothing like the noise it makes when it used to switch off. I have all the original keys including the dark red box which comes with the keys. Is there any way I can disable the alarm with the keys?

| Boot lid lever R D S 17:25:03 |
| | Has anyone else questioned the sense of having the boot lid and petrol cap lever side by side?
I flicked the boot open the other day in error instead of the petrol cap, realised what I had done and flicked the petrol cap open, then went through the car wash having not shut the boot.
It was a very tense few minutes.

| 156 Sportwagon Stereo Help Gary Wales 02:54:46 |
| | Just got a 2003 156 Sportwagon but someone has been meddling with the sound system and ditched the standard head unit for a 9 year old Blaupunkt RNS149 navigation unit which I am not bothered about keeping.
I have three problems:
1. None of the steering controls work - I understand I can purchase an adapter cable for this, has anyone had success with a similar task?
2. The tweeters on the Bose speaker system are dead. Slightly frightened by this, could it be botched wiring or worse could they be blown? Can anyone advise me how to narrow down the fault?
3. I would like to add a CD Changer. I know that the SW gets a clarion unit that fits in a bin in the boot next to the 12V power source.
Does this connnect to any head unit? Is there a preferrred path to run a cable to the dash? How is the unit secured in the bin? Are there any alternative units that could be mounted in this location?
Or should I just start from scratch and buy a new head unit and changer package?
Grateful for any help or similar experiences.
Gary

| 166 stereo PeterMcC 12:00:24 |
| | Stereo suffered a progressive collapse over about 12 hours, no cassette, then no CD player, then no radio, then nuffink.
The 166 stereo is built into the central control panel - there isn't an actual radio unit, hence the Alfa dealer's initial suggestion of going to Halford's and buying a replacement was neither useful nor the cause of much confidence. Still, I've had to deal with them before so that wasn't too much of a shock.
They charged ВЈ80 for a computer hook-up diagnosis. Guess what, the stereo's broken!
Suggested replace ICS at ВЈ1200 plus labour
Any suggestions would be gratefully received - my best idea so far is to add another ВЈ2k to the price of the ICS and buy myself a replacement 166.

| Re: Child seat for 147 Tom 22:26:50 |
| | Update on purchases.
We were put off the Jane lay flat child seat.
In the end we went for just a Britax car seat which doesn't form a travel system with a buggy / pram. We'll just not go on long journeys for a while. Well - if they want to see us they can come to us!
Went fot a Mamas and Papas Pliko Pramette. Some of them have Ј100 off at the moment as there are new fabrics coming out. You can order thru their website.
Strewth its complicated - buying a car is so much easier! Tom

| Alarm Queries Dave Hurrell 17:52:20 |
| | Hi,
I have a 156 1.8 TS, 98 S Reg.
My central locking works fine, no problems at all there so I am not to worried about fixing this at the moment.
The problem is that the light in the middle of the dash for the alarm is always flashing. When its locked, when I'm driving, just the same continuous flash.
Also there are no beeps or flashing indicators when I lock or unlock the car.
And thirdly, sometimes when I go to start the car, the immobiliser doesn't always disengage so I turn it off and turn it on again until the key code light goes out before attempting to start again.
If anyone has any ideas or suggestions as to what I could do to fix any of the above it would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks Dave

| Induction systems Catman 09:48:20 |
| | OK, it's like this
Went to change the air filter on my '98 156 only to find that (like all the series ones) the fixings on the air box were utterly FUBAR. Some PO had molished some screws in to hold the 'cap' on, but getting them out without buggering them up was not possible.
So, I now have an air box that I am not at all convinced is 100% airtight.
Looking around, there are none on ebay, and I dread to think what Alfa would charge for one. So (prompted by SteveH) I started considering induction systems. Not to gain any more power but simply to get rid of the screwed air box.
ВЈ68 off ebay seems a reasonable price, but in the local car 'spares' emporium I noticed some 'direct' filters that effectively plug into the 'raw' end of the intake pipe. There are rather a lot cheaper (like about ВЈ20) which appeals.
So, the question is this, what's the benefit of the 'induction' kit, they don't appear to have any ram effect, or indeed (in most cases) actually have any ducting for colder air. Or should I just get a basic one and save my cash?

| 156 Radiator Fan Unit - thermostat built in? Gherries 23:55:41 |
| | Was half-way through changing the radiator and thermostat(coolant fluid thermostat body), and noticed that as I disconnected the radiator fan from the electrics there were two cables connected to another plug on the fan that wasnt the fan power.
Being intrigued I unscrewed the thing and found what looks like a thermostat/rheostat? Is this a local control/override for the radiator temperature? Anbody know what it does?
More importantly does anyone know if you can replace it as its definitely burnt out?
Thanks

| Recommended garage for GTV service in Surrey/Hampshire, UK? GraemeF 15:47:36 |
| | Hi guys,
I need a favour - I have a 2001 2.0l GTV that I love to bits, but the wife is pressuring me to trade it in for a "sensible" car (not being able to fit the kids in it seems sensible to me, but that's another story...) that is a bit cheaper to run.
I have the dreaded 60k service looming, and if I'm to have any chance of keeping my GTV I need to get through it without breaking the bank. Can anyone recommend somewhere to get it serviced not too far from Camberley in Surrey? How much should I expect to pay?
Thanks, and I'm counting on you! ;) G. -- http://graemef.com

| Brera sales, 159 Sportwagon, etc MarkK 21:49:00 |
| | I popped into Perrys in Amersham at the weekend to check out the Brera. They have a black 2.4 diesel demonstrator. Very nice it is too. I asked how many they'd sold - 12 so far, 9 of which were the 3.2 V6. Not bad at all.
They had a 159 Sportwagon in too. If you're a family man you'll be pleased to hear it has a decent boot, though a high load lip (so as not to compromise rigidity too much).
Incidentally, while looking at the Brera I commented to one of the salesmen that the boot was a reasonable size, nearly as big as an Alfasud's. He said he'd never actually seen one, only photos. None of the others had seen one either. Mind you, all the salesmen there were still in nappies when the last ones were built.
