| Alfa Romeo 166 V6 Cambelt Change Dave Sanders 00:11:48 |
| | Hello,
A couple of recent posts discussing service charges prompted me to think about my next service which is coming up soon, the car is just over 3yrs old and coming up to 48,000 miles.
My 166 has the 2.5 V6 engine and I was wondering when is the best time to get the cambelt changed. I know Alfa states 72,000 miles but understand that people have been caught out by this and been left with a hefty bill!
My car has a full service history and I would say that 60% of the mileage is done on the motorway on long journeys, I certainly don't thrash my car....too often.
When should I consider getting the cambelt changed? at 48,000 miles or 60,000 miles ? Obviously I would prefer to do it later than sooner but I don't want to risk it snapping. I aim to keept the car for another couple of years so I will end up paying for it anyway.
Hopefully the belt change would not effect the fuel consumption as I typically get over 400mile per tank on long motorway journeys which is excellent.
You comments would be appreciated.
Thanks
Dave Sanders

| | Squeak time again on the 156: got the wishbones swapped on one side last year but the other side has started and I can't get it done until the other side of a 2000 mile touring holdiday in which the squeaking will drive me absolutely bonkers (unless it rains for two weeks!). I've read that the temporary cure is to spray WD40. But where exactly? I've googled this but pictures helpfully posted elsewhere seem to have been reoved from the server....

| Swivelling boot badge on pre facelift 156 Brian 13:49:52 |
| | Anybody got experience of replacing one of these? Mine's in a bit of a sorry state so I'm thinking of replacing it. Is it just a case of carefully prising the old one out and pushing a new one in or is it more complicated than that, removing boot lid inner lining etc...? Barry

| ignition control modules Guest 22:54:38 |
| | have an ignition system question for someone: my 82 spider wouldn't start the other day, after i was out for a drive. I tested the spark and had none, so to get it home, I replaced the coil, and she started without a problem and I drove her without a hitch for a few days. then she failed to start again. Again, no spark. As I'm reading in the shop manual, they suggest changing the ignition control modules. What do you think?
I did think about that initially, but the new coil revived her. But now??? if the coil went out again, what could be causing them to burn out? or could the control module be intermitently out? the new coil resistance tests well (although i do realize the shortcomings of that testing). am i looking completely in the wrong direction?
thanks for any thoughts,
iron

Basically there is 1) Display unit 2) Microphone 3) Control box
Everything plugs into the control box which then plugs into the back of the stereo.

| Alfa 156 V6 gearbox problem Frangutz@Gmail.Com 09:43:54 |
| | Hi There!
Been scouring the web in the hope for a solution. I have just purchased a 2001 2.5L V6 Q system (automatic) alfa 156. Am having an issue. The car seems to stay in "safe mode" when driving - that is, only 1 gear in auto and only 2 gears in 'manual' mode.
I've brought the car to a couple of places. One said they couldn't find any faults logged on the system. the other said they found a code 0500 - to do with the vehicle speed sensor. unfortunately he isn't sure what this sensor is (nor is our local dealer!). they think it may be to do with the ABS system? Why this would affect the gearbox (or put the car in safe mode is beyond me).
I'm at a loss as to what the problem is. Sometimes (though now less often) it works ok and i am able to drive 'normally'. but most times it doesn't.
The numerous threads i have read suggest cabling issues, or a sensor issue. we have cleaned all the connectors, changed the ecu and the fault remains.
Does anybody have any other ideas?
Thanks! -F.

| Alfa 156 cold start Slavisad@Gmail.Com 20:01:45 |
| | Almost every morning when I start the engine it works for a second and then stops. When I start it again it works fine. It's not that it doesn't start at all when I turn the ignition key - it starts working (fuel burns) for a second and stops. What could be the cause of this? Spark plugs are not the cause because I installed new ones and it happened with the old ones as well.

| Disc brakes for a 1963 Giulia spider Bill Smith 12:24:13 |
| | I'm trying to find out for a friend what the best way to go for front discs for this car. Do we use the '65 bits, or is there an aftermarket solution some of you folks might know about? The '65 bits don't look all that good to me. We put a 2 liter GTV engine in it and it's brakes are, shall we say, inadequate.

| Alfa 147 - Right hand bend slipping problem Tom 01:33:58 |
| | Hi
I have a 2001 147 2.0 T-Spark which has develpoed an annoying habit of slipping occasionally when going round right hand bends. It doesn't have a problem with left hand bends!
Sometimes the VDC light will start flashing until I straighten up and sometimes it will slip as well. It always catches itself and has never threatened to come off the road properly, yet.
I must stress it doesn't do it on every right hand bend I go round. It happens maybe once every other trip.
Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this?
The Motor Control System Failure light comes on for a few days each month also and then goes away again. Is this linked to the slipping problem?
The last time it came on was before I had the cam belt changed. The cam belt tensioner was broken and when they replaced it all the light went off and stayed off (for a bit!).
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers, Tom.

| Alfa 156 idle rpm Slavisad@Gmail.Com 21:33:53 |
| | Hi, I have Alfa 156 2.0 TS, year of production 2000. I noticed a slight rpm variation when the engine is idle. Normaly, rpm is somewhere below 1000, but from time to time it drops near the red area and then comes back. It happens regardless of clima turned on/off. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

| Camshaft belt Wolfgang 02:18:44 |
| | Hello,
my 166, equipped with a 2.5 liter engine, is now more than six years old, but has run only 46,000 km. Last week, somebody told me that I should change the toothed camshaft timing belt because, being so old, it could break some day. But since such a repair is extremely expensive (about € 1,800), I would like to know if it is actually necessary.
Thanks in advance,
Wolfgang

| Alfa 156 S.W. 2003 Remote Control problem Dino737 03:16:29 |
| | Hello,
My remote control of my Alfa 156 is not working. I checked the battery and it is still good (I only changed it a couple of months ago). If I press to unlock the doors the red light blinks 2 times. (in the manual it is written that if battery power is low it only blinks once).
Also when the battery is starting to get low the doors sometimes still unlock but since a couple off days I am not able to unlock my doors or trunk via the remote control !!
Anyone with similar experiences and maybe found a solution?
I don't have a second remote control so I can't check if there is something wrong with the receiver in the car.
Thanks,
Dino

| 159 or GT ?? Hologram 23:07:36 |
| | After 7 years driving two successive 156s, one a 1.8TS saloon and the second a 2.0 Selespeed Sportwagon, (plus a few other variations in between), I'm now weighing up a GT or a 159 as my next Alfa.
For once I don't have to think about this being our main family car (the wife's getting a Mazda 6 Estate), so I'd be interested in any experiences good and bad with either the GT or the 159 (thus far).
Whichever I chose, it's gonna be the 1.9JTDM powerplant, for tax and torque reasons...
Cheers -Rod-
