Can one disable the odometer for a trip? I looked at the owner's manual and all it showed was a "cluster" fuse. That implies the dashboard. Thanks. Gerry AH, so you want us to tell you how to cheat the manufacturer (warranty), and the next owner of your car? You sound like such a wonderful person, I hope I never meet you or buy anything you have ever owned. Your honesty is overwhelming to say the least.

| | Jeep Huricane - is this a production vehicle or a concept car as stated in the description of the video http://www.ubiq.tv/view,jeep-huricane,135.html i.e. I have seen other videos of this car, and it seems that the 'everyday Joe' is riding it, therefore would have bought it someplace -but I cannot find any commercial information about this car?

I'm looking for a used 4x4 and need some recommendations. Use will be on the beach (Hatteras) with some trips to the mountains. I'm more concerned about the ability to drive on the beach so I don't have to haul my stuff so far when I go surf fishing. In the mountains we often camp and some of the spots require water crossings to get to the parking areas, which I can't do in my daily driver (4 door sedan with low clearance). For beach trips I usually have 3 surf rods and/or 4 surfboards. Passengers are my wife and daughter. I've been looking at Cherokees or 4Runners. Trying to keep the cost under 4k. This won't be a daily driver. I'm looking for something with a decent repair record and sorta decent mpg (or so to speak). At this time I use my dad's 'burb, which is ok but more vehicle than the 3 of us need. Check local prices... suspect the 4runner will be more than a Cherokee or even an older Grand Cherokee used.
For beach use a Manx or other dune buggy might be better if you can find the parts from an old VW for them.
You really want big fat tires so you dont get dug in. 4x4 isnt really necessary.

| 1989-90 Ford Maverick / Nissan Patrol SWB dimensions AdvarP 00:49:55 |
| | Hello,
I am looking at getting a Nissan Patrol / Ford Maverick SWB as an registrable 'upgrade' for a backyard FJ40 1978 that's too expensive to roadworthy...
However I need to get in some tight places where the FJ40 barely has 200mm clearance between mirrors (truck mirrors). I heard the NP / FM is wider than the landcruiser, however not sure if they meant the FJ40 or the 70 series.
Could someone pls advise on the NP / FM SWB's length x width(especially!) x height x distance between axles ? I can't seem to find the info and must know before I spend more time searching for one. Maybe a website somewhere ?
Many thanks

| girl with 86 toyota 4runner clutch problem. Loubear 19:16:56 |
| | I have an 86 Toyota 4runner. Recently after driving over a few dirt mounds and parking, it stopped working. The clutch goes straight to the floor board with no resistance. The gears work when the truck is off, but not running. We've replaced the master cylinder and bled it already. It still doesn't work. How do I fix it?

Check the grounds for head light circuit. THe clue here is turn signal effects them. When a vehicle looses a ground it can do all sorts of strange things electrically. ----------------- TheSnoMan.com

| 4 wheel drive problem jimmy4X4DOA 09:47:32 |
| | Have a 96 GMC Jimmy w/electric activated 4 wheel drive and automatic transmission. When activating 4X4 Hi the transfer case actually goes to Lo range. It doesn't act as if normal Lo has been activated and will not release back to 2 Wheel normally. Much switching between ranges has to be done to get back to 2 wheel normal. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

| newbie needs offroad faq/primer/recommendations Bohemian 08:08:00 |
| | I admit to never driving anything more than my Subaru Outback which I traded in on a Toyota. I need a 4WD with good tires and clearance to drive dirt/rock poor roads and in snow, primarily for photographic expeditions into the wilderness....
Been looking at Jeeps, Toyota pickups, attracted to the Wrangler, but the Cherokee has lots of room to pack around sound and lighting gear which would be a plus, and a pickup would be handier for the occasional 4x8 plywood or bed-moving project. Wouldn't mind being able to sleep in vehicle if early sunrise shoot far off the beaten path required.
The main thing though is getting off the beaten path.... and getting back!! What's important?? Clearance??, tire size??, suspension structure?? extra low gears?? What are the choices, advantages, etc...
thanks in advance for pointers! Peter

| Ping: Mike Romain Will Honea 19:02:35 |
| | Mike, my daughter and her "new" Nissan truck are causing me problems of a type you can probably diagnose.
The thing is a V-6, 4x4 PT, 5-spd manual. She came in the other day worried about a slipping clutch. Under light load on a level road doing seventy five (or more - I know her) she says that the engine suddenly accelerated. No change in speed, no surge. She says that she was getting the same engine noise on the way over to the house, but only when the engine was warmed up good. I took it out and drove the dog p$$$ out of it - jackrabbit starts, full throttle with a lugged engine uphill, and such and I can tell you that that is one good clutch <g>.
Anyway, we head off down the open highway and she points out what she was hearing. With no other sympthoms, the engine noise would increase, then fall off a bit. The engine noise sounded too loud to me so I checked - the fan clutch was tighter than a Scotsman when the outside temp was in the low 30's (F). Even cold, I could basically slip the belt trying to turn the fan. My guess is a clutch locking up and the fan running at high speeds making the noise. Doesn't the fan clutch sense the temp of the airflow rather than engine temp? Otherwise, why is it such a power saver at highway speeds?
I'm ready to just swap the fan clutch but thought I'd get your take first - they sure are proud of those things for a Nissan! Oh, and have you ever heard of a reverse rotation fan? Looking at the parts catalogs, I see about half specifically call out "standard rotation". Never saw that on anything beside the water pump before.
