| Comments on Mitsubishi Outlander? ToddAndMargo 00:50:43 |
| | Hi All,
I am on a used (somewhat crossover) SUV hunt. I mainly will be using my new used SUV for business travel (3 to 4 customers a day) and coping with to 2 to 8" of winter snow. But, there are also a couple of unimproved dirt road with fishing holes at their end that I have an eye on (the hatchery trucks will attempts these roads once a year or so).
Anyway, I also what it high reliability and long lived, but can not afford Honda or Toyota's high resale values.
So, looking at reviews, the Mitsubishi seems to get rave reviews, except on the Mitsubishi news group where is gets a few choice four letter words applied.
Anyone have comments on the Outlander? Is it reliable? How does it do on dirt roads? How about snowy and ice (smooth) roads?
I also looked at Subaru reviews and squeaking and rattling get mentioned a lot. Not too happy with the quality either.
Any other suggestions?
Many thanks, -T

| Suggestions on long lived 4x4 other than Toyota and Honda ToddAndMargo 23:13:29 |
| | Hi All,
It is time for me to get a new used 4wd car. I like the Toyota Highlander and somewhat fond of the Honda CRV.
Problem: the resale value on Toyota and Honda is through the roof. I can not afford them.
Is there another 4wd manufacturer that is similarly long lived as the Toyota Highlander and Honda CRV WITHOUT the extremely high resale problem? (Problem for the buyer; benefit for the seller.)
Many thanks, -T

| Casablanca - Cape Town in a Discovery Td5 Pawel 14:13:43 |
| | Hi there,
I'm new here, so - a big "hello" to everybody.
New, but already with few questions ;)
I recently bought a Land Rover Discovery Td5 '00 with 92000 km made. I plan to go from Casablanca (Morocco) to Cape Town (S. Africa) along the west coast of Africa in 2009/10.
Questions: - anyone did this route before/anyone knows any web resources on similiar routes made before in Africa? - what should I equipe my Disco with? Until now - it's in its standard settings, with however rear suspension on springs. I bought it for 10000 EUR, planned to spend another 5000 for the equipment (like i.e. additional fuel tank)...maybe there is some list on what to equip a Disco with for a long haul adventure off-road ride - what spare parts to take, I would not expect good fuel in the area and this car is on common rail...fuel pump etc. etc.? - would anyone strongly disadvice to go there with a Land Rover? Should I switch to Land Cruiser? ;) - where to start looking for permissions/special documents to travel along these countries (car on polish plates)? - anyone who did this route before: do you think that 3-4 months would do? - anyone who did this route before: what might be the approx. cost (fuel+repairs+permissions etc.)
We plan to start in Gdansk (Poland), drive to south Spain and than do the thing from Morocco. We are 2 - would possibly be looking for some more people (max 2) + possibly for some other car to join. Timings flexible.
Any advice, comments, web resources, forums etc. - welcome!
Best greetings, -- P.

| 80 series Landcruiser rear axle removal - need advice. MugMechanic 22:34:25 |
| | I've been doing the brakes on my '94 Landcruiser, no problem with that, but I've noticed a slight oil leak from the right rear axle when I pulled off the brake disk to check the handbrake and adjust. So I suspect an axle oil seal needs replacing. I have one of those rather useless Gregory's repair manuals and all it says about removing the rear axle is :-
1. Remove the axle shaft to rear hub nuts and spring washers. [OK done, removed six 12mm nuts and spring washers, bit tight with rust but they came off OK with WD40.]
2. Using a hammer and brass punch on the studs remove the cone washers from the axle shaft flange. {Here I'm stuck. I've tried tapping the studs with a brass drift, but nothing happens. I can see the "cone washers" but how hard do I have to belt the studs to get them out? I'm afraid to bash the studs too hard for fear of damaging them. I've applied some WD40 and let it stand overnight.}
3. Install 2 x M8x25mm bolts to the threaded holes in the axle shaft flange and tighten evenly until the flange is dislodged from the rear hub.
[OK no problem, I can do that, but it seems you have to get the cone washers out first as per step 2]
There are no comprehensive illustrations in the Gregory's manual to help.
Can anyone please advise on how to go about step 2 to get the cone washers out, just tapping the studs even fairly hard with the brass drift dies not seem to do the trick.
Cheers,
MugMechanic.

| Fuel starvation Robert Ball 02:59:22 |
| | I can't get fuel from the tank on 79 Scout II. Carb so it just has a sock type filter in the tank, pump is on the engine. I know line is clear after the tank and pump is OK because I hung gallon can from door handle, put line between tank and pump into the can and moved it from the driveway to work area. It has been sitting a lot, and may have been tampered with by an unhappy neighbor. Could sugar in the tank do this? Dropped tank and don't see and problems, will pull "sock" tomorrow. 80 psi of air into the line didn't open it into tank.
