Sounds exactly like you have not bleed all the air from the system.
Caution: fix this before driving, it can result in damage to the
engine.

There should be a bleed on the thermostat housing, and one or two more
elsewhere.

If you bleed all the air, and you find that it 'comes back' you may
hav a leaking head gasket.
