87 Dodge W150 Spicer 44 rebuild

AlaskanFishGuide 18 March 2005 09:43:56
HELP!!! I am trying to rebuild my spicer 44-8FD front axle on my 87
Dodge W150. I am comfortable around tools and don't mind getting
dirty... however I cannot seem to get the ring and pinion free from the
housing. I have removed the bearing caps, pried, pulled, smashed, etc
and can't seem to get the carriers to budge. Any ideas?

You don't mention that you removed the axles yet....?

Thanks for the reply. Sorry I didn't mention it, but I did indeed
remove the front axles (all three).

Well, my Dana 30 was sort of stuck in there when I changed the seals and
I just gave it a pop pry with a bar and out it came. The bearings were
in there snug and the gear oil was making them suction stick.

Where did you pry? Behind the carriers or on the inside of the ring
gear? Did one side come out easier than the other?

I am right handed mostly so I pried on the right side bearing with a
small bar. Once the suction let lose on the one side, the other side
fell out fast. Sort of pop and grab quick before it beaned me.

Are you using a case spreader?

(what's that, he says...)

 Peter,

"What's that" I do say... I don't own one and am not using one... is
that the secret?

A case spreader is a tool that pushes the case apart (not by much, a
few thousandths of a inch...) to allow the carrier to be removed. They
are used on AMC 20's, 44's and some other diffs. Looks like a box or
square with threaded ends with pins that go into the case on eiather
side. You then open it up and lift out the carrier (the center of the
box or square of the spreader is large enough to get the carrier
through.

 Thanks Peter,

I'll look into that.

They didn't use one of those on my 44 when I recently had new bearings
put in. The carrier popped loose just fine and the bearings got
changed. The carrier didn't need to be removed from the case though.

Why are you folks removing the guts?

You can rebuild the whole works with all new seals and bearings and the
guts can stay inside the pumpkin. I recently had the bearings,
including pinion bearings and seals in my 44 done and watched him.
