Auto Transmission Slips Only When Cold

Marty 1 February 2005 08:46:21
I have an automatic V6 1990 Toyota 4Runner with real high mileage. It
runs great except when cold. When I come to the first complete stop
after starting up in the morning, it slips into neutral for a couple of
seconds then back into gear. It's fine when warmed up. Any ideas? Thx.

The level is correct but when it was last changed is anyones guess! I
bought it a year ago and have only done 4,000 kms of the 386,000 kms
it's got. I only noticed the slipping when the cold weather started.
Should I get it changed? The truck runs great otherwise.

You HAVE checked to see that the ATF level is correct, right? How many
miles since it was last changed?

Get the tranny flushed, and the filter changed. (don't let them tell
you the filter won't need changing!) That may (if you are really
lucky) fix the problem.

ditto, flush it and replace the filter, then I would recommend filling
with something like B&M trick shift or something of that sort to try
and "band-aid" the damage that has most likley been done...

The problem is with your forward bands they need to be miked and adjusted,
this one thing many people do not do and the flush of course.

Have it flushed, new filter, and have a bottle of Lube Gard added.

I just recently had my transmission changed by a mechanic of one of my friends, on a 1991 Chevrolet Pickup K1500 1/2 ton single cab. It's a V8, 5.7L automatic tranny w/ over drive. When it was first installed it did not shift gears at all. I paid the guy thinking it was a faulty rebuilt transmission i had bought, and i drove it home like that. Then approximately a week later I take it out for another test drive and it starts shifting fine, but not like it used to, or should say supposed to. It is still running fine but not the same, what could possibly be the problem?
